With a three-goal first half, Eintracht Frankfurt crushed Bayern Munich 5-1 on Saturday, ending the champions’ undefeated Bundesliga season.

After dominating Bayern and exposing their prone defense in the first half, Eintracht scored three goals in twenty-four minutes.

Snow caused the league match against Union Berlin to be postponed last week, so Bayern did not play. Coach Thomas Tuchel strangely changed up his starting lineup at halftime, and his players did not look particularly fresh.

“We feel let down and angry about our first setback. We took a lot of those half chances for granted,” Tuchel said at a press conference. “Many goals today were the result of those half-chances. Nothing we had planned to accomplish was accomplished.”

“After missing last week’s game, we lacked fervor. Although it didn’t appear that way during training, it did look that way today. The individual errors are excessively numerous and obvious,” he remarked.

“I don’t know why I made those particular errors. We simply give ourselves too many opportunities, so we can’t play at this level forever.”

In the 12th minute, Omar Marmoush scored the first goal for the hosts, pouncing on a rebound after Bayern’s Noussair Mazraoui miskicked and Farès Chaïbi struck the crossbar.

Hugo Larsson made it 3-0 five minutes later after Joshua Kimmich made a mistake, and Junior Dina Ebimbe doubled their lead in the 31st after more shoddy Bayern defending.

Kimmich cut the deficit just before halftime with a strong shot from 20 meters out, but it was not enough to stop the home team.

Five minutes into the second half, Eintracht scored again, outlasting Bayern with a textbook quick break, and Ebimbe beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for his second goal of the game to make it 4-1.

Ansgar Knauff scored the game’s fifth goal on the hour, making Frankfurt the first Bundesliga team in 48 years to score five goals in an hour against Bayern since their own 6-0 victory in 1975.

With a game remaining, Bayern maintain their second-place standings of 32 points, while leaders Bayer Leverkusen, on 35, will visit third-place VfB Stuttgart, on 30, on Sunday.

The league breaks for the winter on December 20 and returns on January 12.
