On Monday morning, the Memphis Grizzlies made some roster adjustments for training camp, including the addition of two players and the release of two others. Memphis also released Matthew Hurt and Mychal Mulder while adding Jason Preston and Timmy Allen.
While none of these four guys had significant NBA experience, Mulder did spend two seasons with the Golden State Warriors. The LA Clippers just dismissed Preston, who had never tried out for them, and neither Allen nor Hurt have any significant NBA experience.
“Preston (6-3, 181) appeared in 37 games (33 starts) for the Ontario Clippers the previous year during the NBA G League Showcase as well as the regular season and averaged 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 7.1 assists in 32.8 minutes,” the Grizzlies said about Jason Preston. The Orlando native played in 14 games with the Los Angeles Clippers as a rookie in the NBA, averaging 2.9 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 8.8 minutes. The 24-year-old was selected with the 33rd overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and was a junior at Ohio when he was honored to the 2020-21 All-MAC First Team.
The Grizzlies stated the following about Allen: “Allen (6-6, 210) started all 35 games last season as a redshirt senior at Texas, averaging 10.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 28.4 minutes. After three years at Utah, where he was chosen for the 2020-21 All-Pac 12 First Team, the Arizona native was named to the 2021-22 All-Big 12 Second Team & Big 12 All-Newcomer Team the previous season with the Longhorns. The 23-year-old played for the Grizzlies in the 2023 Salt Lake Summer League and BA Summer League in Las Vegas despite going undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Memphis will probably give these two players chances in their final preseason contests, and even if their playing time isn’t very long, they will be present in camp to demonstrate their abilities.
