The stakes for the match between Group A co-leaders Netherlands and Ecuador could include a mathematical qualification for the winner in the round of 16, depending on what happens earlier in the day.

Qatar and Senegal kick off before Friday, and if that match ends in a draw, the winner of Ecuador against the Netherlands will secure a place in the round of 16.

Both teams are in this position after winning their respective group openers by 2-0 goals. Ener Valencia scored two goals for Ecuador in the first half to defeat the host nation Qatar. Meanwhile, the Netherlands dropped a late game against Senegal. Cody Gakpo scored with 6 minutes remaining and Davey Klassen scored in stoppage time.

The talk before this game revolved around the health of the top scorer for each team. Memphis Depay could go 45 minutes, according to head coach Louis van Gaal, as he continues his path to full fitness. Meanwhile, Ecuador confirmed there is no existing injury that could prevent captain Valencia from playing after he stopped at the weekend with a knee complaint.

Netherlands vs Ecuador Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights

FULL TIME: After an entertaining contest, everything and it’s respectable, Cody Gakpo’s stunning early strike was canceled out by Enor Valencia shortly after the break. Beating Qatar, level on four points, would guarantee both sides a point in the third game, although Ecuador will hope Valencia will be available to play Senegal.

90+4 min: Good news for Enner Valencia, perhaps. He looked in pain as he left the pitch on a stretcher, but is now sitting on the bench, albeit with a large ice pack on his right knee.

90+2 min: Andries Knoppert runs away with one here, taking too long in clearance after the ball is played back to him and a shot against Kevin Rodriguez. It can go absolutely anywhere, but from the perspective of the Netherlands it turns to the right of the post.

90 min: It’s not good for Enner Valencia and Ecuador, as the captain and talisman go on a stretcher. Kevin Rodriguez takes his place for the final few minutes, while Romario Ibarra replaces Gonzalo Plata.

87 mins: Oh. Ener Valencia – who was a doubt for this game with a knee injury, remember – is down again and looks in real pain. What a blow it could be.

86 min: Here’s a chance for the Netherlands to try and take advantage of Vaut Weyghorst’s height as they win a free-kick on the left… but Steven Berghuis is unable to clear the first man.

84 min: The Netherlands doesn’t look like scoring in this second period, although the introduction of Wout Weghorst suggests a change of approach for the final few minutes. We can expect them to be more direct – if they get the chance.

80 mins: If we’re going to get a late winner, Cody Gakpo won’t; He has been replaced by Wout Weghorst, while Maarten de Roon is in for the Koopmans.

78 min: The calm before the storm at the moment. Do these two sides look to be risking any late in their quest for victory?

74 min: The youngest member of Ecuador’s squad, 20-year-old Jeremy Sarmiento comes on for Michael Estrada.

73 min: Cody Gakpo is ahead of the defense… but he’s a long, long way offside, although the flag doesn’t go up until the goalkeeper sends an audacious effort wide.

71 min: Now in the last 20 minutes, Cody Gakpo trips Pervis Estupinan to concede a free-kick. Will we have a winner? You have to say that Ecuador looks more likely to get it if we do.

69 min: Second change for the Netherlands, Steven Berghuis coming on for Davy Klaasen.

66 min: We see the Netherlands as an attacking force for the first time in quite some time. Cody Gakpo passed the ball back to Tun Koopmaners, who couldn’t keep his shot down.

64 min: The Netherlands are all over the place at the back and Enor Valencia is running riot. This time the captain catches Denzel Dumfries on the left and holds Michael Estrada, who can’t hold his shot under pressure from Nathan Ake.

Crossbar! 59 min: Ecuador playing brilliantly here! Enner Valencia’s shot was blocked by Virgil van Dijk but the ball broke for Gonzalo Plata, who took a touch to compose himself before firing a shot off the underside of the bar. So close!

57 mins: Jhegson Mendez goes into the book for a silly late trip on Memphis Depay. It means he will miss Tuesday’s final Group A match against Senegal.

55 min: Ecuador looks more likely to score another goal now, but don’t write off the Dutch with the quality they have up front.

52 min: Ecuador’s tail is here, and at least deserved to be on the terms. Enner Valencia is now the top scorer at Qatar 2022 with three goals, and you wouldn’t bet against him playing here again.

49 min: Goal! Netherlands 1-1 Ecuador (Valencia)
Ecuador equalized! Estupinan’s shot was brilliantly saved by the powerful Knoppert’s left hand but the goalkeeper could only palm the ball into the path of Enner Valencia who fired home from close range.

48 min: It’s only Depay’s second appearance in two months; He managed about half an hour against Senegal on Monday and should get another 45 minutes under his belt here.

46 mins: Memphis Depay starts for the second half; Barcelona forward Steven Bergwijn is on break.

Halftime: That is the last act of the first half. Ecuador is not happy and referee Mustafa Ghorbal has explained a lot about what to do when the players and officials leave the field. The Netherlands were not particularly impressive, but a good early strike from Cody Gakpo gave them the advantage.

45+3 min: And from a corner, the ball is in the net after a touch by Pervis Estupinan…. but Jackson Porozzo is offside and the flag is up and stopped by Andris Knoppert standing in front. Goalkeeper’s view. Ecuador is not happy but that seems to have been the right call.

45+2 min: Parvis Estupinan whips in a great free-kick from the left; Enor Valencia finds space to meet it, but his header flicks past Nathan Ake.

45 min: The Netherlands can be happy to hear the halftime whistle here, they’re not passing any ball they can. Three minutes will be added.

42 min: We’ve seen flashes of what Ecuador can certainly do. They hit the ball well and look particularly dangerous down the left. If the Netherlands’ defense shut down for a moment, Anner looks motivated to get Valencia.

39 min: Ecuador is acquitting itself well here. They had kept seven consecutive clean sheets before Cody Gakpo’s strike, but they have shown some signs of being thrown off by their unfamiliar position at the back.

36 mins: The tempo is now a little calmer, with the Netherlands taking the sting out of Ecuador’s attacks by keeping possession and breaking up play.

32 min: Very good from Ecuador and no surprise it’s Enner Valencia. The striker clipped Denzel Dumfries onto his right foot, with Andries Knoppert pushing his well-struck effort at the near post.

30 mins: The game has come alive in the last five minutes, with Steven Bergwijn almost barreling through the Ecuador defense before Daley Blind, sure as ever, wins a corner well defended by the South American side.

27 min: Stunned by my criticism of moments earlier, Ecuador has roused themselves as Enor Valencia twists down the left and delivers a cross that almost finds Michael Estrada in front of goal, Angelo Preciado winning a corner that comes to nothing the latter.

24 min: Very, very good from Ecuador. They go ahead again, Estupinan’s cross from the left forcing Virgil van Dijk to clear the ball, facing an own goal under pressure from Michael Estrada.

23 min: Ecuador attack right and then left. Moses Caicedo gets to the byline and tries to head the ball back into the Dutch penalty area, picking out Enner Valencia. Netherland Hack Clear.

20 mins: Cody Gakpo is one of the most iconic young players in European football, and his performances at Qatar 2022 showed exactly why. What a season he is having for PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands

18 min: The Netherlands already look like they are managing this game carefully, keeping the ball patiently and trying to outplay Ecuador. That early goal gave them some consolation that they had to wait until their first game against Senegal.

15 min: Enor Valencia is a real doubt for this one with a right knee injury, but the Ecuador captain looks lively enough so far and is moving freely as he harries Jurien Timber on the right of the Netherlands defence.

13 min: Five goals in his 11 internationals for Cody Gakpo, who found the net in both games at Qatar 2022.

11 min: Ecuador free-kick, long way out. The ball is played wide to Preciado, who sends it into the Dutch penalty area. It’s headed across the penalty area, half cleared and a break for Enor Valencia. His volley deflected off Virgil van Dijk’s head.

8 min: Ecuador trying to get a foothold in the game, knocking the ball from behind as they try to regroup after that initial shock. This is the fastest goal scored in the World Cup at 5 minutes and 4 seconds.

6 min: It’s a superb finish from Cody Gakpo who rifles the ball into the top corner from outside Ecuador’s penalty area after Davy Klaassen riffles it into the top corner. Ecuador’s long run of more than 11 hours comes to an abrupt end without conceding.

5 min: Goal! Netherlands 1-0 Ecuador (Gakpo)
Cody Gakpo gives the Netherlands the lead!

3 min: The Netherlands have dominated possession in these early stages, aiming to beat a team that hasn’t conceded a goal in any of their past seven games.

1 min: Ecuador gets the ball rolling, their players wearing navy shirts, white shorts, and white socks. Netherlands players wear all orange kits.

Kickoff: Ecuador get us out and running, and the clash is underway between the two sides who won their first Group A match.

2 minutes to kickoff: We’re all set and there’s plenty of color in the show!

Netherlands vs Ecuador Lineup, Team News

Memphis Depay to start or not? If Van Gaal is expecting the same intense, physical start to the game from his South American rivals as shown in the opener against Qatar, it may be better to save Depay for the second half and let Vincent Janssen battle the Ecuadorian defenders.

Meanwhile, Andries Knoppert should continue to start in goal after his shutout against Senegal.

According to Ecuador beat reporter Joseline Vera, La Tri will line up in a 3-4-3 formation to match the Netherlands lineup.

Troyes defender Jackson Porrozzo comes into the picture as a third center-back alongside winger Romario Ibarra. The front three will be Real Valladolid’s Gonzalo Plata, target man Michael Estrada, and Enner Valencia.

The joint leaders are going head to head for the top spot in Group A at the Khalifa International Stadium. The top-placed team will avoid a possible round of 16 match against the winners of Group B, which will be headlined by England.

Ecuador impressed in the opening round against hosts Qatar, but the Dutch showed grit and poise to hold off Senegal and pound away late to win their opener.

An upset result for the 44-ranked South American side is not entirely out of the question. Here’s how you can see all the action in the major global regions.
