The Netherlands will be looking for a convincing win against hosts Qatar in their Group A final, as the Netherlands aim to win the group, and on paper, should be a more favorable matchup in the Round of 16.
The Oranje have not yet qualified mathematically for the knockouts, but going into the final match they are joint top of the group with Ecuador, leading on the disciplinary points tiebreaker (fewest cards). The Group A winner will surprise a date with England in the last 16 rather than landing the second-placed team (barring any surprises from the USA, Iran or Wales).
Qatar, who have already been eliminated after losing both their matches, are no match for a Dutch side who are currently on a 17-match unbeaten run. However, Louis van Gaal’s side didn’t blow anyone away in Qatar, with Cody Gakpo’s goal easing them into relief.
If the Netherlands beat Qatar, they will top Group A while Ecuador fail to beat Senegal. But if the South Americans also win, they will finish level on points and play the group tiebreakers.
