Yesterday, at a pro-Palestinian demonstration at the University of South Florida, police wearing riot gear opened fire on protesters using tear gas.
Police deemed the demonstration to be a “unlawful assembly” on Tuesday afternoon, leading to the arrest of ten persons. According to a press release from the school, between 75 and 100 demonstrators, some of whom were students and others who weren’t connected to the institution, showed up on campus brandishing wooden shields, tents, and umbrellas.
As the day went on, police noticed that participants were expressing on social media and in person that they intended to resist law enforcement and university employees by using some of the items they had brought on campus as weapons. Because of this, USF police declared that the protest was no longer peaceful and that everyone involved had to leave the area, according to USF.
