Donald Trump, the Republican contender for president, announced on Tuesday that he will see Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi the next week.

In his first public speech since the alleged murder attempt on Sunday, Trump praised Modi as “fantastic” but also labeled India as a “very big abuser” and chastised a number of nations for their trade practices with the United States.

Thus, India, a major abuser, will be visiting me the next week, and Modi is an amazing man. At a town hall in Flint, Michigan, Trump said, “I mean, fantastic, man.” “These leaders, many of them, are amazing… They’re at the top of their game, as the saying goes, and they use that against us. However, India is an extremely harsh country.

Regarding the encounter, Trump withheld additional information. A request for response from CNBC was not immediately answered by the Indian Embassy in Washington.

In 2020, while visiting India as president, Trump made a commitment to strengthen trade relations with that nation. Right now, China is India’s top trading partner, with the United States coming in second.

Between September 21 and 23, Modi is expected to visit the United States and attend the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit, which will be hosted by President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware. Additionally, the Indian prime minister is scheduled to appear before the UN General Assembly in New York.

Modi is coming to the United States for the first time since he was elected to a historic third term in government in June.

A new chapter in bilateral relations between the United States and India was heralded by a number of technology and defense agreements inked by Modi during his state visit to Washington in June 2023.

The two nations’ cooperation has become stronger since then. In an effort to strengthen the global semiconductor value chain, the U.S. Department of State said earlier this month that it will collaborate with the India Semiconductor Mission and India’s electronics and IT government organization.

“To ensure that the global semiconductor supply chain keeps up with the present global digital transformation, the United States and India are essential partners. According to the announcement, “This partnership between the US and India highlights the potential to grow India’s semiconductor industry to the benefit of both countries.”
