The United States faced an ever-uphill battle against No. 8 Netherlands in the Round of 16, but it felt like they had a chance to reach the quarterfinals for the second time.
Instead, they fell short, losing 3-1 to goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries.
Finishing in front of the net made the difference as the Netherlands capitalized on three of their best chances, while the United States missed several good opportunities. It started early, as Christian Pulisic saw a great opportunity go begging in the third minute, saved by Andries Knoppert.
From then on, the Netherlands punished the USA for every mistake, as defensive errors and offensive weaknesses began to haunt them. Overall, the U.S. created chances at various points in the game, but only scored once on a wild bounce off the legs of substitute Haji Wright.
The Netherlands advance to the quarterfinals, where they will play either Argentina or Australia, while the United States has only made one quarterfinal appearance at the World Cup in its history.

USA vs Netherlands Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Fulltime: USA 1-3 Netherlands
At the end of the day, the United States produced a positive performance, created many chances, but it is the finish that leaves them disappointed. The Netherlands, as they did in the group stage, took advantage of every opportunity they created, while the United States failed to match that intense nature. Pulisic’s big miss is huge early on, as is Haji Wright’s down the stretch.
At the other end, defensively the Netherlands stood tall and made key tackles and blocks when needed, while the US fell apart at bad moments, losing track of runners and far-post lurkers. There is room for growth for this young United States team, but they must cut down on mistakes.
90+4 mins: CHANCE, USA! Dutch can’t clear it, but there are a couple of attempts blocked! First it’s Jordan Morris who slides it to meet it at the near post but he misses the body, and then it bubbles to Gio Reina who goes to Younis Musah for the wall, but it’s denied. Time is running out.
90+3 min: Great block by Frankie de Jong to deny Younes Musah’s scything cut-back towards the unmarked American at the top of the penalty area. The Netherlands have replaced Cody Gakpo and Nathan Ake in favor of Matthijs de Ligt and Voot Weghorst.
90+1 min: Jordan Morris comes on for Anthony Robinson in the last chance saloon for USA. There is a stoppage time of six minutes, and it certainly does not seem to be enough.
85th minute: A brilliant through-ball from Christian Pulisic almost found Haji Wright but Virgil van Dijk barely managed to clear it out for a corner. On the set-piece, the ball finds Walker Zimmerman who goes for a desperate bicycle kick, but it comes off exactly what you’d expect a 6-foot-2 defender to bicycle.
81st minute: Goal! The Netherlands! The Dutch are on their feet, but the U.S. lie flat defensively and Denzel Dumfries concedes a terrific goal at the far post, alone to meet Daley Blind’s cross. Tim Reim completely lost track of his man at the far post, and Deirdre Yedlin was nowhere to be found. It is a dagger.

78th minute: Chance, USA! Wow, Noppert is sensational! He comes out of the net off his line to clear the ball through the legs of the streaking Gio Reina. If he gets the sliding tackle wrong, it’s red and he’s off, but he’s Johnny on the spot!
76th minute: Goal! United States of America! It’s the dumbest goal you’ll ever see, but America doesn’t care! After a corner is cleared from Pulisic, it goes back to Dutch and Pulisic sends it in again with a horizontal cross. Haji Wright gets what appears to be a casual touch on the ball as he is bundled up by a defender, and it goes over the goalkeeper and in! How?!

75th minute: Chance, USA! Haji Wright is in after a terrific back-pass from Memphis Depay, but Wright’s first touch is a disaster, and the chance goes begging! For the second time tonight the USA had a great chance but it went wide.
Sergino Dest came in for DeAndre Yedlin.

74th minute: Gio Reina has a wild hit from the top of the penalty area, past Virgil van Dijk, but he is challenged hard by Koopmainers and the effort flies wide, nowhere near. Jio is slow to wake up, because America lost this game.
72nd minute: Chance, Netherlands! Turner again! Teun Koopmeiners hits from deep, and Turner gets down to his right to save it. The rebound falls to Memphis Depay, and his scrambling header is on frame, but Turner wrestles himself to deny the second effort. American goalkeeper’s greatest moment.

70th minute: USA appears to be in panic mode. They are struggling to maintain a physical presence against a very well-drilled Netherlands side that looks very comfortable. JD Robinson produces another great tackle to dispossess Denzel Dumfries, conceding a corner, which meets the head of Virgil van Dijk but his header goes over the crossbar.
67th minute: Haji Wright and Brendan Aaronson are on, along with Weston McKenney and Tim Weah. They are the right changes, required from Berhalter. Can America find two slow targets?
Aaronson’s first act is to muscle the ball over to Jurien Timber, and then foul the Ajax youngster.
63rd minute: Anthony Robinson brings down Cody Gakpo in the penalty area on the break, and both players are injured. The Dutch are screaming for a penalty but the official waves play. Both players take ages to be fun.
61st minute: Chance, Netherlands! Save, Turner! He suggests a great Memphis hit on the bar!
59th minute: The United States has a good free-kick opportunity from deep on the left as Christian Pulisic is fouled, but there’s no one in white to meet his ball in the penalty area, and it’s cleared.
Moments later there is a second free-kick for the US from the same position, and this time Pulisic takes it, but it can’t beat the first man. The US has been disappointing at set pieces in this tournament.
53rd minute: Chance, USA! Fire at the Weston McKenney bar! Gio Reina engages down the left, and he turns the Juventus midfielder at the top of the penalty area, but rifles just inches over the crossbar. He later screams primal. America is playing with a lot of spirit, but still has no goals to show for it.

50th minute: Chance, Netherlands! Matt Turner SAVE! As Walker Zimmermann is beaten by Memphis Depay’s cross from behind, Turner comes up with a left-handed save, and Dest then fights to clear another Dutch attacker.
49th minute: Chance, USA! Line cleared! Out in the corner, Weston McKenney gets a header flicked onto the far post, and Tim Ream is there to poke it home, but Cody Gakpo saves it before trickling it over the line. So close again!

48th minute: The U.S. starts the half with a good chance, coming off a long throw from McKenney, but Knoppert is there with a punch. At the other end, Tim Reim steps up to make an extraordinary tackle to stop the Dutch counter.
46th minute: Changes for both teams, and the American fans finally get what they want. Gio Reyna is active for the United States, replacing Jesus Ferreira, who had no impact up front. Reyna or Weah will play as False 9.
The Dutch replaced Klaassen and De Roon with Teun Koopmaners and Steven Bergwijn. Bergvision is dangerous, America should be careful
Halftime: USA 0-2 Netherlands
The United States had some really good moments in that first half, but the Dutch only had two big chances, and as they have all tournament, they finished both. Memphis Depay put them in front, and then Daley Blind delivered an absolute heartbreaker on the stroke of half-time.
Greg Berhalter felt somewhat comfortable going into the breakdown one, but a 2-0 deficit is a big mountain to climb. It’s a long way back for the USA against a very comfortable Dutch defense. Pulisic’s early miss is huge.
45+1 min: GOAL! The Netherlands! Oh, that’s an absolute GUT PUNCH for the USA to probably score the Dutch with the last kick of the half. The defense is all over the place and Daley Blind ends up in almost the same position as Memphis in the first.
Blind surprised Dutch-born Sergino Dest with a run in his face at the penalty and was free for his first international goal in eight years.

45th minute: It’s end-to-end stuff now. The US has another great build-up but Sergino Dest’s shot is blocked. This leads to a Dutch counter-attack down the right with Cody Gakpo, but Tim Reim shields him enough for his teammates to recover, and then Anthony Robinson intercepts his cross in the area. The pace here has picked up considerably toward halftime.
A minute was added before the break.
43rd minute: Chance, USA! Another save nopert! Tim Weah unleashes a pile driver on the volley, but the Dutch goalkeeper makes his second big stop of the half, diving to his left to block the effort. Great hit by Weah, a good save.

42nd minute: Tim Weah creates a glorious chance with a dribble down the right, but he takes one too many touches and Jesus Ferreira is left to take an emergency touch. The US striker also takes a poor touch and shoots out without a chance.
38th minute: A really good burst from Younis Musah’s ball forward sees JD Robinson cut back for Christian Pulisic to send him across, but Sergino Dest can’t get his head on it. For the most part, the Dutch seem comfortable sitting back and exploiting pressure, cutting off passing lanes and leaving America with very few options to progress.
33rd min: The USA look extremely sloppy in midfield, where they have been the best so far this tournament. Adams maintains his important level, but Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah were very loose in possession.
29th min: A nerve-wracking moment in the US box as Memphis appears to have a chance to rip a shot, but Walker Zimmerman does an exceptional job of shielding him by countering a corner kick. The first is thrown out ahead of another, which targets Virgil van Dijk, but Zimmerman clears away.
27th min: The US continues to look for more opportunities, but finds it difficult to find a way through this solid Dutch defense. A YIKES moment from Turner as a heavy touch nearly falls on a lurking Dutch attacker, but he cleans up and gets away with it.
21st min: Memphis hits the American target from an insanely tight angle and long range, and it goes wide of the mark. Cody Gakpo is not satisfied with that daring attempt.
18th min: The US has kept their high energy since the goal, with the Netherlands absorbing some pressure in the US’s attack in the third. Still no more chances on goal.
Depay’s goal meanwhile takes him clear to second all-time for the Dutch national team, as his 43rd international goal, passing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
10th minute: GOAL! NETHERLANDS! The Dutch side goes first! Memphis Depay completes a penetrating counter that completely knocks the American defense out of the field. It comes from the right flank to Depay, all alone on top of the penalty spot, and he produces a cool finish. It is much, much too easy for the Netherlands against an American side that was caught way too high in the field.

8th min: The United States is under great pressure in the frontcourt, but there is no goal yet. Jedi wins a corner that Pulisic delivers well to the far post, but target Tim Ream is walled in by good Dutch defending. Moments later, Pulisic sends in a cross from the left, but it evades the remaining attackers.
3rd minute: Chance, USA! Save, Nopert! No, Christian Pulisic should score that! He’s clean on goal, but the Dutch goalkeeper stopped! The Chelsea man is onside through the ball from Adams who catches the Dutch backline out, but Pulisic’s effort is blocked by Knoppert’s leg. It has to go, a great opportunity is missed!

2nd minute: As expected, high initial pressure from the United States gave them significant possession in the attacking half in the first few minutes. This is no surprise, as the Dutch have been weak under pressure at this World Cup.

Kickoff: Here we go, Kickoff at the Khalifa International Stadium! Can the U.S. secure a quarterfinal spot at the FIFA World Cup for the second time? Or will the Dutch, who are number 8, remain unbeaten in 19 games and reach the next round?
The USA are the only team to concede a goal without a penalty at this World Cup, while Cody Gakpo has scored in every game so far. Gotta give one of those!
USA vs. Netherlands lineup, team news
The only questions in the US lineup are at center-back (Walker Zimmerman or Cameron Carter-Vickers?) and center forward (Haji Wright, Josh Sargent, or Jesus Ferreira?).
Tim Weah and Christian Pulisic (if healthy) are untouched, which means Giovanni Reina will continue to get his time. Pulisic was cleared to play, but it was not specified if he was fit to start.
How many members of the Netherlands team were affected by the bout of flu that killed the team in the lead-up? We’ll soon find out based on the lineup Louis van Gaal rolls out. Dutch media indicate that all 26 players were on the training ground the day before the match.
Will Memphis Depay get his wish and partner with Steven Bergwijn? According to leading outlets in the Netherlands, the Barcelona forward has gone public with his preference to work with Bergwijn, which is sure to bring even more scrutiny to Van Gaal’s lineup selections.
Netherlands (3-4-1-2, right to left): 23. Knoppert (GK) — 2. Timber, 4. Van Dyck, 5. AK — 22. Dumfries, 15. De Roon, 21. De Jong, 17 Blind – 8. Gakpo – 7. Bergwijn, 10. Depay
