Much of Asia awoke to the news that nearly 151 people were killed and dozens injured in an apparent stampede in Seoul's Itaewon nightlife district.

It is not clear what caused the crash, but eyewitnesses said the district's narrow streets were already packed with partygoers and made it difficult to move around.

Most of those killed so far have been teenagers and people in their 20s, officials said. Many were dressed in Halloween costumes.

More than 1,700 emergency responders have been dispatched, including 517 firefighters, 1,100 police officers, and about 70 government employees.
