Employees braced for widespread layoffs at Twitter on Friday as new owner Elon Musk overhauled the social platform.

In a letter to employees obtained by several media outlets, the company said employees would find out by 9 a.m. Pacific Standard Time if they were fired.

The email did not say how many people would lose their jobs.

Some employees tweeted Friday morning that they had already lost access to their work accounts.

An email to employees said the job cuts were "necessary to ensure the company's success moving forward."

About 7,500 Twitter employees are expected to be laid off when Musk takes over the company.

Already, the billionaire Tesla CEO has fired top executives, including CEO Parag Agarwal, on his first day as Twitter boss.

He also removed the board of directors of the company and installed himself as the sole director.

On Thursday night, several Twitter employees took to Twitter to express support for each other —

often tweeting blue heart emojis to simply indicate Twitter's blue bird logo — and salute each other with emojis in response.

As of Thursday, Musk and Twitter had made no public announcement of the upcoming layoffs.

This worker adjustment and retraining notification statute require employers with at least 100 employees to disclose that includes 500 or more employees,

regardless of whether a company is publicly traded or privately held.

California Department of Employment Development spokesman Barry C. White said Thursday the agency had not received any recent notifications from Twitter.
