Brazil lost to Cameroon but still finished top of Group G at the World Cup 2022, while Cameroon bowed out despite Vincent Aboubakar’s late winner.

Cameroon needed a win to keep their promotion hopes alive but, with time running out, Aboubakar scored a stunning header just two minutes into added time. The African team needed Serbia to take a point from Switzerland, but the Swiss held off Brazil with a 3-2 win to claim second place in the back section.

Brazil’s much-changed lineup still boasted plenty of attacking talent with Anthony and Rodrigo Cameron running in the backline and Gabriel Martinelli, making his first international start, forcing Davies Ipasi to tip in his firm header from Fred’s cross.

It was largely the best that got to Brazil before halftime, although there were clear chances to go Cameroon’s way in the first 45 minutes. Moumi Ngamaleu worked space on the left and Brian Mbeumo delivered a cross that attacked the far post, connecting with a fierce downward header that Ederson pushed away from his right.

Aboubakar flashed a shot at goal shortly after the restart but APC was in the thick of the action then, pushing away another Martinelli effort before spilling Ader Militao’s effort, the ball being recovered to turn back.

Brazil kept up the pressure as they looked to make it three wins from three, but Cameroon kept denying them with a mixture of patience and luck. They needed more at the other end, however, and they looked as if they would come up short, with Jerome Ngome Mbekeli sending in a pinpoint cross from the right that it deserved, with Aboubakar guiding Ederson’s superb header into the bottom corner. .

Brazil’s chances suddenly hung in the balance when Martinelli and Bruno Guimaraes failed to convert gilt-edged chances in the closing stages. It has made little difference, however, as Cameroon heads home on the back of a memorable win while their opponents face South Korea in the last 16.

Cameroon vs Brazil Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights

FULLTIME: It’s all over and Vincent Aboubakar’s late goal gives Cameroon a win on the night, but not enough to keep them in contention as Switzerland just beat Serbia. Despite this defeat, Brazil has become the group winner while Switzerland is in second place.

90 + 9 minutes: What a chance to level! Merquinhos lays the ball down for Bruno Guimaraes, but he can’t get a hold of the bouncing ball and sends his shot over the bar. Heads in hand all round for Brazil.

90+8 min: Gabriel Martinelli scores in front of goal and that could be Brazil’s last chance.

90+7 mins: Marquinhos loops a cross into the area but Bruno Guimaraes gets his jump all wrong and can’t get enough power into his header, the ball looping into the grateful hands of Davies Ipasi.

90+5 mins: So, to remind us where we are now. Serbia needs a goal against Switzerland to keep Cameroon in the tournament. Brazil did not finish second in Group G.

90+3 mins: Red card! Vincent Aboubakar takes his shirt off to celebrate that goal and, after the celebrations are over, he picks up his second booking of the night, and off he goes! He doesn’t look remotely concerned, you have to say.

90 + 2 mins: Goal! Cameroon is broken! Out of the blue, Jerome Ngome Mbekeli delivered a cross from the right and Vincent Aboubakar guided the ball past a helpless Ederson into the bottom corner with a superb header!

90 min: All hands on the pump for Cameroon now, Christopher Waugh making another block to turn Gabriel Martinelli’s cross behind. We’re nine minutes into added time.

89 min: That might be the moment, Raphinha rolls a pass to Pedro, who turns sharply inside the area but then rushes his shot and lifts the ball over the bar.

87 min: Bruno Guimaraes and Rafinha inject some pace and urgency into the Brazil attack as they lead another charge. Rafinha lost the ball but Brazil quickly regained possession and Guimaraes attempted to flick on Gabriel Martinelli’s pass.

84 min: Extraordinary block from Christopher Wu, who flicks the ball in at the near post to prevent Bruno Guimaraes from turning in Rafinha’s low cross from the right.

82 min: Brazil breaks the momentum and Gabriel Martinelli shows a neat pair of heels to Vincent Aboubakar, who responds with a rugby tackle to drag his man to the ground. You will see something like a yellow card.

80 min: That said, Cameron is starting to apply more pressure now. Vincent Aboubakar tees up Dani Alves on the left side of the area and the Brazil captain backs away, creating a small space for a shot for the next corner.

78 min: Oliver Ncham lets Cameron’s first shot in a while fly over from 25 meters. The ball comes through the crowd so Ederson looks slow, but he gets down to make the stop.

76 min: Cameron isn’t committing to getting men forward yet, but they’ll have to start soon, you think.

73 min: Gabriel Martinelli cuts the ball back to Bruno Guimaraes on the edge of the box but the first touch causes the ball to loop up and, with Eric Maxime Choupou-Motting, the shot flying wildly over the bar.

70 min: Rigobert Song urges his side from the sideline, time ticking down. Cameroon will need to pick up the tempo, but don’t be surprised if that gives Brazil a chance to pick them up on the break.

67 min : Good run from Everton Ribeiro, breaking into the penalty area, but Enzo Ibos get his tackle right, sliding in to take the ball.

64 mins: Substitutions for each side. Brazil has withdrawn Gabriel Jesus in favor of Pedro, while for Cameroon, Carl Toko Ekambi has come in favor of Brian Mbeumo.

63 min: Gabriel Martinelli is bright this evening, turning left and sending in another dangerous cross.

60 min: Switzerland in front again, Cameron staring down the barrel. All they can do is win here and hope the score changes in the next game.

57 mins: And now another clearance for Davies Ipasi, who deflects Eder Militao’s low effort through the crowd. The ball rolls away, the goalkeeper pushing it back as the Brazilian attackers get inside.

56 mins: Very good work from Davies Ipsy as he allows Gabriel Martinelli to get forward in the area and push past the goalkeeper.

55 min: It’s actually three changes for Brazil. Marquinhos is in for Alex Tells while Bruno Guimaraes and Everton Ribeiro replace Fred and Rodrigo.

54 mins: Scramble! Davies Ipasi is the lucky man here, looping the ball out for Rodrigo to save at the feet of Gabriel Jesus, who can’t bring it down in time and the goalkeeper is finally able to collect it.

53 mins: Alex is up against Tails and looks to be in some trouble. Marquinhos will take his place.

51 min: With news coming through Switzerland now that Serbia is 3-2 up with Cameroon not far behind, Brian Mbeumo’s pass slips onto Vincent Aboubakar’s shot which flies past Ederson’s goal with the keeper scrambling.

48 mins: Alex Telles is down after a big collision with Andre-Frank Jambo Anguisa, although it looks like he should be able to continue for now.

46 min: Cameron gets us going again. They are starting with their sixth consecutive group exit, although one goal changes all that.

Halftime: Brazil had more of the ball but were yet to find their rhythm, and Brian Mbeumo’s header on the stroke of half-time came for either side to break the deadlock. Brazil still progresses as Group G winners, but Cameroon will have to find a goal from somewhere.

45+3 mins: Save! On the left flank, Maumee Ngamaleu and Brian Mbeumo attack the far post, connecting with a fierce downward header that Ederson pushes to his right.

45+2 minutes: It’s a great ball from Gabriel Martinelli that dribbles across the face of the penalty area before Davies Ipasi gets his palms on it and the goalkeeper is relieved to see the ball drop into the top of his net.

From the corner, Antoni works a clear routine, playing the ball down into the box. Rodrigo shoots to meet it at the near post but can’t whip it inside the post.

45+1 min: We’re into the first leg of four minutes of added time as Switzerland draw 2-2, putting themselves in second place!

44 min: Rodrigo’s runs have caused Cameron problems so far, and he looks for Antoni’s run but the pass is too heavy. Samuel Eto’o is watching. Cameron can outdo him!

42 min: Brian Mbeumou makes a good late run into the Brazil area, but a pass played to him doesn’t do much and the ball loops up for Ederson to make an easy catch.

38 min: Anthony’s turn to threaten this time, Fred finds his Manchester United teammate on the right. Anthony comes inside with his left foot, but Davies Ipasi is behind his curling effort.

36 min: Brazil’s wide players have seen their best source of success so far, with Gabriel Martinelli looking to cut Rodrigo into the box, but he loses his footing at the crucial moment.

Serbia now leads Switzerland 2-1, and is second in the updated Group G table!

34 min: Dani Alves is the man over the ball this time, but he curls the ball harmlessly over the bar.

32 mins: Another charging Rodrigo run and another Cameron defender diving inside. This time it’s Collins Fie, another yellow card, and another free-kick on the edge of the area.

30 mins: Rodrigo, Alex Telles, and Dani Alves have free-kicks. It’s the former that hits it, but it’s straight into the wall.

Serbia drew with Switzerland, meaning a win would put Cameroon in contention.

28 min: Rodrigo has been quiet so far but bursts into life as he drives through the heart of the Cameroon defense. Pierre Kunde pulls him down, clearing the yellow card and a good position for Brazil, a free-kick opportunity in the middle and 25 meters out.

25 min: Brazil slowly building up the pressure, Gabriel Martinelli dancing past Collins Fie on the right and just failing to find Gabriel Jesus in the middle. Christopher Waugh then did well to cut out Antony’s cross.

23 min: News coming from the next game, where Switzerland has taken the lead. They are one win away so Xherdan Shaqiri’s strike is bad news for Cameroon.

22 mins: Fred has never scored an international goal and his finish here is high over the bar, although in fairness it was a difficult effort, with Alex Tells playing a decent ball in behind the Manchester United midfielder.

20 mins: First real sign of danger for Cameroon, a good run by Eric Maxime Choupou-Moting takes him into the area. The Bayern Munich forward crowds out but Cameron recycles the ball and Ederson is forced to dive to his left to push away.

17 mins: First corner for Brazil but Cameroon’s inexperienced backline deal with it relatively well, Ader Militao charging away.

14 minutes: This would have been a decent way to mark your first start! Fred looks up to deliver a pinpoint ball from the right and Gabriel Martinelli pulls off his marker before attacking the ball. He makes good contact with his head, Davies Ipasi tipping it.

13 min: Antony is always showing for the ball. He is taking advantage of the opportunity to show what he can do.

10 min: It’s been a fairly quiet start in terms of chances or attacking moments, although Brazil look more likely to put a move together, as you’d probably expect.

7 min: The referee is standing for nothing here and Eder Militao is also in the book, sticking his foot in Moumi Ngamaleu and bringing down the Cameroon man.

6 min: Nouhou Tolo is having a difficult evening. Anthony’s clever turn takes him in behind the Cameron left-back, who dives in an attempt to win the ball back and only succeeds in tripping Brazil’s winner to pick up a booking.

5 min: Cameroon’s starting central defenders Christopher Wuh and Enzo Ibos have five caps between them before this game; Brazil’s much-changed attack still has the quality and a way to make it a baptism of fire.

2 min: Early warning for Cameroon as Brazil cut through their backline with alarming ease. Antony advances to the vast field of space below right. He looks for Fred with his pullback, but the midfielder is stretching and can’t make clean contact.

Kickoff: A reminder of how Group G stacks up at kickoff, as Brazil gets us started. Brazil is already through to the round of 16 and is certain to top Group G if they lose. Meanwhile, Cameroon must win and hope Switzerland fails to beat Serbia.

3 minutes to kickoff: Failure to win means Cameroon will be knocked out of the World Cup group stage for a sixth consecutive appearance in the finals. They last reached the knockout rounds in 1990 and have never won their last group stage game in seven previous appearances at the World Cup (D2 L5).

First-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana has left Qatar after falling out with manager Rigobert Song over his style of play and has been replaced by Davies Ipasi against Serbia.

In that game, Vincent Abubakar starred off the bench with a goal and an assist so should be rewarded with a start this time around.
