12 years after the infamous meeting in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, Ghana and Uruguay are meeting again today.
In one of the most memorable moments of drama in recent finals, the pair played out a thriller at South Africa 2010, with Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez handling a Ghanaian shot on the line to prevent the Black Stars from scoring a deliberate goal in extra time. are the winners.
Ghana missed the ensuing spot-kick and the South Americans won in a penalty shoot-out to book their place in the semi-finals.
Fast forward to today, and Suarez is expected to be in the Uruguay lineup once again, as both sides look for a win that would be enough to send them through to the knockout stages in Qatar.
South Korea needs a big win against already-qualified Portugal in their next Group H game.

Ghana vs Uruguay Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Full – Time : Ghana 0 – 2 Uruguay
99 mins: SAVED!!! Alidu Seidu conceded a late free-kick 25 yards from the Ghanaian goal and was booked in the process. Nicolas de la Cruz gave Uruguay one last chance to score that crucial third goal, but as the referee blew the final whistle his curling strike went straight into the gloves of Lawrence Atti-Zigi!
97 mins: BLOCKED!! Sebastian Coates comes forward to play as a striker and Edinson Cavani crosses him. He slides to score at the front post, but a last-gasp block sends the ball wide!
96 min: Ghana runs at the other end and overlaps in defense. The ball comes to Kamaldin Suleimana, who fires a shot toward goal, which is blocked by Sergio Rochet!
95 mins: SAVED!!! Uruguay went forward once again and the ball fell to Edinson Cavani on the edge of the box. He drills a low shot towards the corner, but it’s superbly tipped around the post by Lawrence Atti-Zigi in the Ghanaian goal!
94 min: BLOCKED!!! Baba Rahman does well to keep possession down the left and goes to the far post. It’s down to Mohamed Qudus, whose first-time effort is headed in before Sebastian Coates brilliantly gets in the way!
93 min: Uruguay at the other end and Edinson Cavani chases a through ball into the box. He collides with Alidu Seidu in the area, but the referee waves away the protest and VAR doesn’t intervene!
92 min: After the powerful Mohamed Salisu’s header clears a Uruguayan cross, Ghana go forward on the counter. Mohamed Qudus’ inside pass finds Antoine Semey, but his first-time shot is blocked!
90 mins: The Ghana goalkeeper gets treatment after landing on his neck from that amazing save, and we’re in for eight more minutes of injury time with both sides trying to save themselves from the World Cup!
89 mins: What a save!!! Coming out as things stood, Uruguay threw everything forward and Nicolas de la Cruz crossed from the left. Edinson Cavani meets the ball with a powerful looping header, but a brilliant, almost supernatural reflex save from Lawrence Atti-Zigi sees him tip the ball over the crossbar!
87 min: Mohamed Qudus escapes three defenders as he breaks down the left, but a very, very late challenge from Sebastian Coates stops him, gifting the Black Stars a free-kick and seeing the Sporting Lisbon man pick up a yellow card!
85 min: The clock is ticking down on Ghana’s World Cup hopes here, and Uruguay’s too, as South Korea beat Portugal 2-1 in their same match to put Uruguay in second place – on goals no less!
81 mins: SAVED! Nicolas de la Cruz loses out to Mohamed Qudus in midfield, and the Ghanaian danger man picks up the ball on the edge of the box. He fires a shot towards the bottom corner, but Sergio Rochet heads the ball brilliantly to tip the post and out! What a save!
79 mins: WIDE!!! Thomas Partey’s hacked ball from the forward missed two Uruguayan defenders and fell to Antoine Semenyo in the box. Substitute is one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Sergio Rochet beats his effort to the far post!
77 mins: Federico Valverde picks Lawrence Atti-Zigi off his line and looks to beat the goalkeeper from the halfway line, but sends his ambitious effort wide!
76 min: Kamaldeen Suleimana drives in Guillermo Varela and wins a corner in the process. The ball is crossed into the box, but Sebastian Coates heads it clear and Uruguay tries to break Edinson Cavani!
73 min: Otto Addo rolls the dice with more changes for Ghana, as Inaki Williams and Salis Abdul Samed come on for Daniel-Kofi Kereh and Antoine Semenyo respectively.
71 min: Mohamed Qudus drives down the middle and evades three defenders on his way to score. He shoots from the edge of the box, but his 20-yard effort flies over the bar!
70 mins: SAVED!!! A cross into the Ghana box is headed by Mohamed Salisu, and the loose ball is volleyed home by Federico Valverde! Pile has a driving shot in, but Lawrence et-Ziggy gets down low to parry the ball away!
69 min: Ghana win a corner, and the ball bounces around the box. It comes down to Thomas Partey, whose first touch is poor and he can shoot before the ball slips into Sergio Rochet’s gloves!
66 min: Ghana’s disaster left the field, playing a big part in making it 2-0. Suarez comes on to rapturous applause from the Uruguayan faithful. Edinson Cavani replaces him, and Facundo Pellistri also comes on for Nicolas de la Cruz.
65 mins: WIDE!!! Darwin Nunez brings the ball in from the left, and some beautiful one-touch plays give Facundo Pelestri space to shoot. He does so, but his attempt is snubbed and sent into the side net!
64 min: Kamaldin Suleimana fires a teasing cross into the Uruguay box, and Sergio Rochet comes in to claim it. The goalkeeper didn’t get anywhere near the ball, and Osman Bukhari couldn’t turn the ball home after making a late run at the back post!
61 min: Luis Suarez barrels into Mohamed Salisu on the halfway line, knocking the Ghanaian centre-back to the ground. The Uruguayan captain has been booked as a result, meaning that, along with Darwin Nunez, La Celeste’s striking duo are both walking a tough road for the rest of the game.
59 min: No penalty! The referee has decided that Amartey got the ball fairly. I’m not sure he did to be honest. The odd thing is that they didn’t look at the way Nunez controlled the ball in the first place.
It feels like the referee has got the right answer but with the wrong working.
58 minsAmartey definitely got a touch on the ball, though he went past Nunez to get it. I think it’s a foul, but there’s also a suggestion that Nunez controlled the ball with his hands.
57 mins: Huge penalty appeal for Uruguay! De Arrascaeta lofts a beautiful ball over the defense to Núñez, who chests it and is about to shoot when Amarte makes a dangerous challenge from the sideline. Nunez goes down, sure it’s a penalty, but the referee isn’t interested.
The referee is going to the monitor! There are two things to watch for – whether Nunez handled the ball, and then he was fouled by Amartey.
On 55 minutes Valverde’s free-kick is headed across the area and Salisu clears. Uruguay is 35 minutes away from a potential last 16 clash with Brazil.
They last met in the 1970 World Cup.
54th minute Suarez put Salisu back in top form and fouled 25 yards from goal.
50 minutes Bucari lets Olivera run and a deep cross is headed by Pellistri. Ghana looked more focused at the start of the second half; They lost their way before halftime.
48 minutes Pellistri plays a long ball down the right towards Nunez. He gets away from Amartey but then flicks his cross toward Suarez.
46 mins: Just wide from Bucari! Almost the perfect start for Ghana. A cross from the left reached Bucari just beyond the far post 15 yards out. He chested it and bobbled a low shot wide of the far post. Despite being offside, Qudus moved towards the ball and missed anyway.
46 minutes Ghana started the second half, needing two goals to reach the last 16 (probably).
Half time: Ghana 0-2 Uruguay
It was as lively and controversial as we expected. Andre Ayew missed a penalty for Ghana and Giorgian D’Arscaeta took the lead. He scored twice – both scored by Luis Suarez, the team’s second goal – and then got away with a stamp on Alidou Seidou.
Ghana will feel tough again, but the truth is that Uruguay, and Suarez in particular, are in over their heads.
50 min: Federico Valverde is cut down on the right by Jordan Ayew, and swings in the resulting free-kick. Luis Suarez gets his head on the ball, but can only see his front post header wide of the target!
46 mins: Just eight minutes added on, confirmed by the fourth official, and this wild first half isn’t over yet!
46 mins: Just eight minutes added on, confirmed by the fourth official, and this wild first half isn’t over yet!
45 min: A wide Uruguayan free-kick from the right evades everyone, but is recovered by Suarez from the left. He dribbles back into the box and tries to cross, but the ball bounces off him and back for a Ghanaian goal kick.
42 min: Alidou Seidou is accidentally caught by the studs of Georgian de Arascaeta, and despite taking enough time to get to his feet, the Uruguayan goalscorer faces no action from the referee!
39 min: Darwin Nunez finds space again down the right and looks to find Luis Suarez on his left in the box. The ball is cut out well by Salis Abdul Samed and the Ghanaian midfielder comes out with the ball before winning the free-kick.
37 min: Mohammed Qudus once again throws inside the box and picks up the ball from 25 yards. He tries to find the bottom corner, but Jose Gimenez fires the shot wide, giving the Black Stars a corner!
34 min: Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentanker is out through injury, replaced by Tottenham Hotspur’s Matias Vecino.
32 mins: GOALL!!! Sublime strike, and Uruguay double their lead!!!! Facundo Pellistri cuts inside and finds Luis Suarez. He flicks the ball up to Darwin Nunez, who heads back inside to Suarez, who dinks it over to Georgian De Arrascaeta. He arrives late to volley a well-timed shot into the bottom corner, and in a matter of moments, La Celeste fly into a 2-0 lead!
29 min: 10 wild minutes of football, giving us and the crowd a chance to breathe again. If you’re just joining us, Ghana had a penalty but Andre Ayew’s weak effort was saved, and Uruguay scored at the other end through Georgian de Arascaeta.
26 mins: GOOAALL!!!!! Uruguay leads 1-0!!! A cross from the right eludes two Ghanaian defenders and finds Luis Suarez, who sinks in to shoot low on goal. Laurens Atti-Zigi gets down to save it, but doesn’t get away from the goalmouth, and Georgian D’Arrascaeta gets his hands on the opener from just a yard out! Ghana were quickly made to pay for their missed penalty by Uruguay, and where have we heard this before?
23 mins: Off the line!!! Darwin Nunez runs into goal again and chips the ball over Lawrence Atti-Zigi. Beaten by the goalkeeper, the ball flew toward the net, but Mohamed Salisu turned to hook it off the line for Ghana! There is no break in this game!
21 min: He saves it! Captain Andre Ayew, the only player left over from Ghana’s 2010 campaign, steps up to take the penalty, and his slow, slow run-up is met by a gentle shot, and Sergio Roche guesses right to clear it! What a moment and what a drama between these two sides!
18 minutes: Penalty! The referee goes to look at the pitch-side VAR screen, and it’s not long before he’s back on the pitch and pointing to the spot! The Uruguayan isn’t happy anyway, and he books Darwin Nunez for dissent as he and his teammates surround the official!
17 min: The VAR referees are really watching this, as Sergio Rochet’s challenge on Mohamed Qudus looks like a penalty at every angle…
16 mins: SAVED! Jordan Ayew cuts inside from the left and hits a low shot towards goal. Sergio Roche scores a goal for Uruguay, but as soon as he gets to the ball, he can spill the ball into the path of Mohamed Qudus, who is dismissed! The referee awards a corner, but with VAR on hand, we haven’t seen the last of it!
13 minutes: Chance! De Arrascaeta’s header is latched onto by Nunez, who bursts towards the box. He is closely followed by Salisu and Amarte, who crowd him out and win the ball before he can pull the trigger!
12 mins: There are already plenty of challenges between Federico Valverde and Salis Abdul Samed, which turns into a battle between the two in midfield!
9 mins: Varela gets down the right and tries to feed Pellistri on the byline, but the winger is forced wide and his cut-back into the box only finds the white shirt!
7 mins: Kudus is fouled in midfield and Partey crosses the ball into the box. It is well attacked, but Guillermo Varela clears his lines for Uruguay and La Celeste.
4 min: Ghana builds well on the edge of the Uruguay box as Kudus creates space before feeding Thomas Partey. He’s dispossessed though, and the South Americans run on the counter. Nunez looked to make a run into the box from De Arascaeta’s pass but got to the edge of the area to no avail.
2 min: Jose Gimenez moves into a 50-50 with Mohamed Qudus, and the Uruguayan defender gets worse, but eventually gets to his feet, clutching his calf for a while.
Kick-off: And away we go! Suarez started the game for Uruguay, and this long-awaited game is off and running at Al Wakrah!
Ghana vs Uruguay Lineup, Team News
Diego Alonso is confident he has a strategic plan to beat Ghana to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup.
The Uruguayan boss has used two different formations in the first two matches – a 0-0 draw with South Korea and a 2-0 loss to Portugal.
But, in whatever shape they line up, he expects his team to be fully prepared to take advantage of Ghana’s weaknesses on Friday.
He said: “We know where we have to aim and what we have to do. We will give everything to qualify for the next game.”
Ghana is predicted to start from 11
(4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. Ati-Ziggy (GK) — 2. Lamptey, 18. Immortality, 4. Salisu, 14. Mensah — 5. Parte, 21. Abdul Samed — 20. Qudus, 10. a. Eve, 9. J. Ive – 19. Williams
Injuries: None
Suspended: None
After his side beat South Korea 3-2 last time out to keep their promotion hopes alive, Otto Addo may be tempted to stick with the same 11.
It means Gideon Mensah, Tariq Lamptey and Jordan Ayew will all retain their places after missing out on Ghana’s tournament opener defeat to Portugal.
Uruguay predicted to start at 11
(3-5-2, right to left): 23. Rochette (GK) — 2. Gimenez, 3. Godin, 19. Coates —13. Varela, 15. Valverde, 6. Bentancur, 5. Vecino, 16. Olivera – 11. Nunez, 9. Suarez.
Injured: Araujo
Suspended: None
Although switching to a 3-5-2 didn’t pay much dividends against Portugal, Alonso could try sticking to the same shape and partnering Luis Suarez with Darwin Nunez in hopes of different results this time around.
That would leave Edinson Cavani as a late option from the bench.
