The efforts of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to avert a government shutdown have just become more challenging as former President Donald Trump intervened to support the strategies of extreme right-wing House Republicans, who would rather see a funding lapse than deal with the Democratic-led Senate & White House.

The remarks were made in a tweet on Trump’s social media account. Trump is the front-runner for the Republican presidential candidate in 2024 and supported McCarthy for speaker.

“The Republicans suffered a severe defeat on the debt ceiling, received NOTHING, and are now concerned that they will be held accountable for the budget shutdown. Wrong!!! Whoever wins the election will be held accountable, Trump stated in the article, adding: “UNLESS YOU GET EVERYTHING, SHUT IT DOWN! Close the Border, halt the militarization of ‘justice,’ and put an end to election meddling.

His statements go counter to those of McCarthy and many House Republicans, who believe that a shutdown would be politically counterproductive and more likely to thwart conservative objectives. They point out that shutdowns frequently fall short of their professed policy objectives. Right-wing demands in this situation, such as cutting expenditures below levels in a two-year budget agreement and defunding Trump’s prosecutors, have no chance of clearing the Senate.

McCarthy’s response when asked about Trump’s remarks from Monday was, “I think we’re much stronger when we stay open. I fail to see how our attempt to safeguard our border can be accomplished by not paying the troops and our border agents. Securing the border would be included in the government’s budget.

Trump’s comments might give McCarthy’s right-wing critics the justification they need to keep pressing for what they want despite pressure from other Republican leaders to avoid a shutdown. McCarthy’s position is further complicated by his own commitment to Trump.

“A shutdown would only help the Democrats gain ground. In a recent appearance with Fox News, McCarthy stated that it would give Biden the authority. “Our troops wouldn’t get paid. Our border agents would not be paid. There would be an increase in visitors. I genuinely want to accomplish something.

In the Fox News interview, McCarthy also attempted to distance Trump from his Republican competitor, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, as DeSantis was the first to support the right-wing spending strategies.

I worked alongside Ron DeSantis. By no means is he on the same level as President Trump, according to McCarthy. Without the support of President Trump, “he would not have won.”

McCarthy, however, has refrained from criticizing Trump because he sees it as essential to preserving the speakership in the slim House Republican majority. Trump commands the devotion of many GOP voters despite losing the 2020 election, and he is the overwhelming favorite to be nominated for president a third time.

The history of budget fights has been distorted by Trump’s post. Shutdowns are rarely attributed to presidents since they are frequently sparked by demands from the party in opposition that holds some control of Congress. According to surveys, Republicans were more to blame for government shutdowns under the administrations of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama because they insisted on budget cutbacks before giving in to demands to defund Obamacare. Trump became a break to the rule after he instigated the longest government shutdown in modern history, lasting 35 days from December 2018 to January 2019. Trump capitulated and consented to reopen the government without winning any concessions as pressure rose and Democrats remained steadfast.

After receiving a call from Trump, McCarthy reaffirmed his desire to approve a short-term package on Monday and his belief that the GOP holdouts are willing to try to settle their differences on a broader funding proposal.

“You must continue to operate the government. I mean, closing the government simply makes people weaker,” he remarked. “Why would they want to cease funding the Coast Guard, border agents, or soldiers? How that makes you stronger is beyond me. What point you are attempting to make escapes me?

While others may prevent a swift vote, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., intends to approve a short-term bill this week before the deadline of September 30 to avoid a shutdown.

McCarthy wasn’t mentioned in Trump’s statement, but the Republican senator from Kentucky who leads the minority in the upper chamber and has backed bipartisan efforts to fund the government, Mitch McConnell, came under fire.

Republicans need to learn how to fight, says the author. Trump composed. Are you listening, Mitch McConnell, the most incompetent, illiterate, and conflicted “Leader” in the annals of the U.S. Senate?
