When a suspect was detained in connection with the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, Jada Pinkett Smith expressed her thoughts.
In a post on her Instagram Story after learning of the suspect’s arrest on Friday, Smith, 52, expressed her need for “closure” regarding the passing of Shakur, with whom she had a close association for many years.
Smith responded to the arrest by writing, “Now I hope we will receive some answers along with some closure.” She added a dove emoji and said, “R.I.P. Pac.”
The Associated Press and ABC News reported on Friday that Duane “Keffe D” Davis had been detained by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as a suspect in connection with the shooting death of Assata Shakur on September 13, 1996. Since the incident occurred 27 years ago, the arrest represents the case’s first significant advancement in that time.
Davis was hauled into jail on Friday morning, according to the AP. One count of murder with a gang enhancement was filed against the suspect after his arrest. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department identified him as the “on-ground, on-site commander” who “ordered the death” of Shakur at a press conference on Friday, according to AP.
Shakur was shot four times while sitting in a car on his way to a Las Vegas nightclub on September 7, 1996. The 25-year-old rapper passed away from his wounds on September 13 while he was at the height of his success. Despite rumors that he had been murdered, the investigation ended quickly.

Smith has frequently discussed her friendship with Shakur in public, referring to him as her “best friend.”
At the Maryland-based Baltimore School of the Arts, the two initially became friends. He came over to me on the first day and introduced himself, Pinkett Smith once recalled in an interview. I could tell by looking at him that he wasn’t necessarily the kind of cat I would even want to handle.
But as soon as he came near me, she said, “he was like a magnet. He kind of sucked you in once you started paying attention to him. And after that, we got along great.
Shakur was a “brother” and “father figure” to Smith, according to her. You only experience a relationship like ours once in a lifetime, she continued.
Smith discussed her acquaintance with Shakur in a 2015 interview with Howard Stern.
“I’ve never met somebody like Pac in my life. Shakur, the son of revolutionary and Black Panther Afeni Shakur Davis, “had such charisma,” she remarked.
Smith said that she and Shakur tried to kiss at one time to further their relationship but both felt it wasn’t right. Smith, who later wed Will Smith, added, “Being older, I have a greater understanding about the stuff that was between us.
There was absolutely no physical connection between us despite the fact that we were two very passionate young people.
This summer’s reopening of the inquiry into the death of Tupac Shakur led to the latest development in the case. Authorities searched a Henderson, Nevada, residence associated with Davis on July 17 after executing a search order there.
According to the 2019 book Compton Street Legends, the suspect, who is now 60, said he is one of three “living eyewitnesses” to Shakur’s murder.
