The 2022 FIFA World Cup has officially begun, and host nation Qatar was on hand to kick it off, as per FIFA tradition.
Instead, it was Ecuadorian striker Enor Valencia to steal the spotlight, as he scored twice to lead La Tri to victory. With a 2-0 win, Ecuador has climbed to the top of Group A with all three points.
The result made Qatar the first World Cup host nation to lose its opening match. Head coach Felix Sanchez has cut disappointing figures on the touchline in all games, and he will hope to regroup for the rest of the tournament to avoid becoming the second World Cup host after South Africa to exit the group stage.

Qatar’s best chance of the first half came late just before the break, with Almoz Ali looking to become the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer. Al Hados rifles in a cross from the right wing and Ali is completely unmarked, but his header goes wide. It was a moment he wanted back.
The hosts had precious few moments in the game, and while they pushed their way back, they never found the back of the net. Late on, substitute Mohamed Muntari almost produced a moment to savour, but the tournament candidate’s early goal ended agonizingly over the crossbar.
