Mexico had most of the possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances against the Polish side in their World Cup 2022 Group C opener.

Coach Gerardo Martino has found himself under pressure due to sub-par performances in the build-up to the tournament but his side has made a positive start to their campaign in Qatar.

Alexis Vega wasted the best chance of the first half when his header went wide of the post, while the dangerous Jesus Gallardo almost caught Wojciech Szczesny out when he got on the end of a through ball as the Poland goalkeeper got a hand on his effort.

Poland’s star striker Robert Lewandowski, still chasing his first World Cup goal, could not turn his dominance into a goal as Mexico pressed hard.

Full time: Mexico 0-0 Poland

A missed opportunity for both teams in a sense. Mexico looked the better side for most of the game but could not capitalize on any chances. Poland had only one focus, but the great Robert Lewandowski’s weak penalty – which could have stolen victory – was saved by Guillermo Ochoa.

Saudi Arabia tops Group C after the first-round match!

90th minute: There will be seven minutes of added time. Where do they find all this?

87th minute: Poland also makes a late substitution, with Juventus forward Arkadiusz Milik replacing Piotr Zielinski.

84th minute: Mexico sends on Uriel Antuna for Alexis Vega, who has worked tirelessly without reward.

82nd minute: Back to the matter at hand. Raul Jimenez burst into Poland’s penalty area but the Wolves striker’s touch frustrated him as he looked ready to pull the trigger.

77th minute: NEWSFLASH: Manchester United has just announced that Cristiano Ronaldo will leave the club “by mutual consent, with immediate effect”. They thanked him for his “huge contribution over two spells at Old Trafford”.

75th minute: 15 minutes of normal time remaining – plus at least another five minutes of the rest of the tournament – in this Group C encounter. Either side can score a winner or we’re heading for our second goalless draw of the day.

72nd minute: Poland also makes a change, bringing on midfielder Przemyslaw Frankoski for Sebastian Szymanski.

70th minute: Double change for Mexico. Charlie Rodriguez has been active in place of strikers Raul Jimenez and Henry Martin and Hector Herrera, who have struggled for fitness in recent months.

64th minute: Chance for Mexico! Kevin Alvarez turns in a cross from the left that Henry Martin heads towards goal, but Wojciech Szczesny is equal to it and dives to his left.

60th minute: This has certainly fired up the crowd, with Mexico fans celebrating like they’ve won the World Cup.

57th minute: SAVED! Robert Lewandowski pushes his kick to the right, but Guillermo Ochoa dives to his left to keep it out, winning his 137th cap. Lewandowski is still looking for his first World Cup goal.

55th minute: Penalty to Poland!

54th minute: Hector Moreno and Robert Lewandowski jostling in the box. Both players go hard for the ball and pull each other’s shirts. Possible fines? It’s gone to VAR.

52nd minute: Same pattern as the first half so far. With Mexico applying most of the pressure, Poland – who have had a solitary effort on goal – are content with content.

46th minute: We’re back at Stadium 974. Poland brought on Birmingham City’s Christian Bielik for Roma youngster Nikola Zalewski as a half-time replacement.

Half time: Mexico 0-0 Poland

Mexico is the better side and they have had a few half chances, but Poland is determined. Let’s hope for a goal in the second half…

45th minute: We will have two minutes of added time…

44th minute: Hirving Lozano tries a one-two on the edge of the box before going down the field. The ball falls to an overlapping Jorge Sanchez, who forces Wojciech Szczesny to tip his effort over the bar.

39th minute: Mexico’s Luis Chavez teases the ball from the left, but it eludes several of his teammates in the Poland box. El Tri is putting all the pressure on, but the potential is still at a premium.

37th minute: An important bit of history in today’s game, anyway.

33rd minute: Poland is sitting deep in a defensive block and Mexico are very happy to try to break them. A bit of a strategic stalemate at the moment after the initial energy level drop.

30th minute: Saudi Arabia, incidentally, has declared a national holiday tomorrow after their sensational win over Argentina earlier in the group. And why not.

28th minute: Another half-chance for Mexico as Jesus Gallardo gets a toe to a through ball in front of Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who half-hands it before his defenders bail him out for a corner.

26th minute: Best chance of the game so far. Mexico’s Alexis Vega gets a good head on a cross from the right, but can only push his effort past the right post.

23rd minute: Robert Lewandowski joins Mexican defender Cesar Montes on the edge of the area but is doing nothing.

21st minute: Mexico has reached the last 16 in the last seven World Cups since 1994, but has never advanced. Can this competition take a step forward? A good start from El Tri.

17th minute: Hirving Lozano looks like a threat for Mexico and he tries a couple of tries on the edge of the box, but the overlapping Jorge Sanchez is flagged offside.

12th min: Good pace and liveliness at the start of this encounter. At a corner, Mexico whipped in a curling ball from the left but central defender Hector Moreno couldn’t keep his header down.

8th minute: A lovely pass from Robert Lewandowski leads Poland into the attack but Mexico defender Jesus Gallardo gets back to clear the danger and concedes a corner, which fails.

5th minute: A mistake by Poland allows Mexico to score Herving Lozano down the right. The Napoli striker curled the ball right across the face of the goal, but Alexis Vega – arriving at the far post – couldn’t get on the end of it.

1st minute: Mexico kicks off. After Argentina’s shock loss to Saudi Arabia earlier, Group C has been upended in all directions, and there is a big opportunity for both these teams.

3 minutes from kickoff: It’s time for the anthem at Stadium 974. We will start soon.

Mexico vs Poland lineup, team news

Jesus ‘Tecatito’ Corona’s absence is a blow to Gerardo Martino’s plans, with the Sevilla forward instrumental in their qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With his starting spot likely to be taken by Alexis Vega, in an altered 4-3-3 system, Martino is able to rely on some significant experience elsewhere in his squad through Guillermo Ochoa, Nestor Araújo and Jesus Gallardo.

Wolves star Jimenez will lead El Tri’s attack if fit, while Eredivisie-based duo Edson Alvarez and Eric Gutierrez are worth keeping an eye on in midfield.

Mexico (4-3-3, right to left):

13. Ochoa (GK) — 19. Sanchez, 15. Moreno, 3. Montes, 26. Alvarez — 23. Gallardo, 16. Herrera, 24. Chavez — 10. Vega, 22. Lozano, 20. Martin

Two of Poland’s key players stepped up and returned to the 2022 World Cup play-off against Sweden in March, with Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski both scoring in a 2-0 win.

Coach Czeslaw Michniewicz switched between tactical formations during his UEFA Nations League campaign but he looks set to settle on a 3-4-3 with Lewandowski as the focal point.

Poland (4-2-3-1 right to left):

1. Szczesny (GK) — 2. Cash, 14. Kiwior, 15. Gillick, 18. Berezhensky — 13. Kaminsky, 10. Krychowicz — 21. Zalewski, 20 Zielinski, 19. Szymanski – 9. Lewandowski
