England is one of the favorites to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but now comes the hard part: a gauntlet of four knockout round matches that begins with the first meeting against Senegal in the round of 16.

The Lions of Teranga are the defending African champions, and despite missing captain and star Sadio Mane, they are a squad full of talent who play for clubs across Europe. More than a third of the team is based in England.

This is the second time that Senegal is in the knockout rounds of the World Cup, while England is hoping to reach the quarter-finals for the fourth time in the last six World Cups.

Senegal finished as runners-up in Group A, beating hosts Qatar and Ecuador, and losing to the Netherlands despite giving the Dutch all they could handle. England is at the top of Group B after easily defeating Iran and Wales while drawing with America.

England vs Senegal Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights

Full – Time: England 3 – 0 Senegal

England is in the quarter-finals, after a difficult opening spell they have made it look too easy.

93 min: Senegal wins their first corner of the game after Bamba Dieng hits a free kick against the wall. England is clear – it’s almost all over.

90 mins: Four minutes to go, and as we enter them Marcus Rashford puts Luke Shaw’s cross into the side-netting at the far post.

84 min: England has conceded just twice so far, those pesky goals against Iran, but France’s attacking force next Saturday will be a very different story from what they have faced so far.

79 min: Marcus Rashford sends in a low cross from the right just short of Harry Kane’s outstretched leg in the fourth minute. Think Gazza in 1996 – except this time, England is almost home and dry.

76 min: Harry Kane is shaken by the booked Kalidou Koulibaly. Kane wrestles around for a while, maybe it’s worth taking him off the field to protect him?

73 min: Senegal wins a free-kick, and Pape Matar Sarr curls it low around the wall, but Jordan Pickford can only watch it curl wide into his side-netting.

66 mins: Henderson soldiers on – Foden and Saka have already made way.

Start planning for England and France next Saturday.

63 mins: It should be a stroll now, and Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford are coming on. Worryingly, Jordan Henderson has gone down with his knee.

It is feeling very comfortable for England now.

49 mins: Pape Matar Sarr shoots from distance but it bounces to the ground and goes well wide.

46 min: We’re going back, how will Senegal pull it back? They were good around the 30-minute mark but chasing the game is a different animal.

GOALLLLL! England 1-0 Senegal – Jordan Henderson!

A brilliant move, Jude Bellingham scooting down the left, looks up, and sees the Liverpool captain move into the box. His pass goes past a defender, and Henderson side-foots it down into the bottom corner.

35 mins: Ismaila Sir is brought back with a shirt tug by Kyle Walker – he’s lucky not to get booked, and Sir is furious.

34 mins: Senegal are enjoying their best spell at the moment – Ismail Jacobs harrys the defense near the corner flag. England has been losing possession regularly.

31 min: Great save! Boulaye Dia pounces on Saka’s mistake and fires a shot across goal to his left. Jordan Pickford sticks out his left hand and kicks it away.

28 mins: It’s getting sloppy – Nampalis Mendy and Bakayoko are in contention as Saka gets stuck in midfield. They will know each other from the Premier League, maybe there is a bit of previous history?

26 mins: Jordan Pickford is 10 meters out of his area with the ball at his feet. His defense gave the ball away for a while, a Philo phase from England.

22 min: Ismaila Sir latches onto a loose ball in the England area and fires his shot over, but Senegal are confident John Stones handled it in the build-up!

VAR check, it’s away and we move on, but England wobble there.

England is firmly in control here.

9 mins: Jude Bellingham’s cross skims across the face of goal – it needs a touch but there’s no white shirt near it.

7 min: Jude Bellingham causes a foul to win a free kick about 40 meters out. Kyle Walker passes the ball to Declan Rice, who turns it to Harry Maguire but his header is blocked. A decent, well-thought-out move, though.

5 min: Boulaye Dia gets between Harry Maguire and John Stones in the area, but Maguire’s knee saves the day to take the ball away from the Senegalese striker.

3 min: It’s sensational noise in the stadium, mostly from the Senegalese fans – much more musical than previous games. Jordan Henderson picked up a pass towards Phil Foden, but he couldn’t get to it as he rolled out for a goal kick.

1 min: Senegal is already under England pressure, with Jordan Pickford cutting the kick into touch after a Test back-pass.

Kickoff: As we move on, England has played in all white while Senegal has donned their second kit, which is all green.

2 minutes to kickoff: Stirring all around, and now we’re seconds away from this mouth-watering brawl.

England vs Senegal lineup, team news

With manager Gareth Southgate able to rotate many of his players through the three group games, the Three Lions will reach the Round of 16 without any injury concerns. Harry Kane has also gone out of his way to confirm he felt no leg pain from the blow in the opener.

Southgate fielded 20 of his 26 players in the group stage. The six unused players include two backup goalkeepers (Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale), and Ben White who left camp for personal reasons.

Bukayo Saka is set to regain his place on the right wing against Senegal after the team’s place in the group final, and Phil Foden will also feature in attack, meaning Raheem Sterling will be on the bench. Midfielder Mason Mount is another player who could return to the starting XI.

England (4-3-3 right to left): 1. Pickford (GK) — 2. Walker, 5. Stones, 6. Maguire, 3. Sha – 8. Henderson, 22. Bellingham, 4. Rice – 17. Saka , 9. Cain, 20. Foden

Senegal manager Aliou Cisse will have to make some changes to his squad, especially in the absence of Cheekhou Kouyate (injury) and Idrissa Gana Gueye (suspended for yellow card) in midfield.

Leicester City’s Nampalis Mendy should get the nod, along with Marseille defensive midfielder Pape Gueye and box-to-box Rayo Vallecano mid Pathe Sis.

The team is already without captain and star Sadio Mane due to an injury suffered in the World Cup lead-up to Bayern Munich. Elliman Ndia of Sheffield United is expected to play in Mane’s place.
