Five people were killed when a gunman stormed a condo board meeting in Toronto, Canada, on Sunday, police said.

York Regional Police Chief James McSween said the gunman was shot and killed by police at a condo in Wahan, Ontario.

“Horrible sight,” said McSween. “Six dead. One of them is a subject. Five others are victims.”

Apart from the five deaths, one other person sustained gunshot wounds and was recuperating in a hospital on Sunday night.

The chief said there is no further threat to the community and hopes to return residents to the building once the special unit’s investigation is complete.

The identity of the gunman was not released late Sunday and the motive for the violence is unknown.

Mass shootings are rare in Canada and Toronto has long prided itself as one of the safest big cities in the world.

In 2020, shortly after a gunman shot and killed 22 people in Portapeak, Nova Scotia, Canada, Canada banned 1,500 models of “assault-style” guns and components, and set limits on how destructive bullets could be.

The per capita gun death rate is much lower than in the US, where there are more gun laws.

A 2021 analysis by the University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation says Canada’s gun homicide rate is 0.5 per 100,000 people, compared to the United States’ rate of 4.12.
