A 72-year-old woman died and two others were injured when a Denny’s restaurant sign fell from a sign post in Kentucky and struck a car.
Police responded to Denny’s in the 2000 block of North Mulberry Street in Elizabethtown around 1:30 p.m. Thursday in a report of a fall sign.
The photos show the mark on the top of the blue vehicle, crushing parts of the roof.
First responders pulled two women and a man from the wreckage and took them to local hospitals, where the 72-year-old victim died, Elizabethtown police said in a news release.
His identity has not been released pending family notification. The condition of the other two victims was not immediately clear Friday morning.
An investigation is underway as to what caused the sign to fall, but the police said that strong winds contributed to the incident.
“I’m definitely able to say that the wind was a factor. A very, very tragic situation,” Elizabethtown police spokesman Chris Denham said.
Wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph hit parts of Kentucky on Thursday, the National Weather Service office in Louisville said.
A Denny’s spokesperson said the restaurant chain was aware of the incident.
“Safety is our top priority, and we are working with authorities to better understand what caused this situation. Our thoughts are with everyone involved,” the statement said.
