South Carolina coach Dawn Staley vehemently defended his top-ranked Gamecocks on Tuesday following critical comments from UConn coach Geno Auriemma two days earlier.

After an 81–77 victory over the top-ranked Gamecocks, Auriemma said that Huskies guard/forward Lou Lopez Senechal had bruises on his body during the game.

He added, “It’s appalling what teams do to him now.” “It’s not basketball anymore. I don’t know what it is, but it’s not basketball.”

Staley hit back on his radio call-in show Tuesday, saying that when his team has success, “we’ve been called something other than locked players.”

“They play the right way,” she continued, “and approach it the right way whether they win or lose. We don’t condemn anyone’s game. They are always uplifting the game of women’s basketball and when We’d been banging our heads by UConn for all those years, so I didn’t say anything.

South Carolina’s victory Sunday was the fourth in the last five meetings between the schools, including the national championship game last April.

Staley’s South Carolina teams were 0–7 against UConn prior to their recent run of success.

Staley said, “We’ve been called out for a lot of things and I’m bothered by it.” “I’m fed up with it because I coach some of the best human beings the sport has ever seen.”
