Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar Lionel Messi has penned an emotional post for Argentina supporters after their triumphant return to their homeland as world champions.
Messi, 35, came into the limelight after guiding his Argentina national team to a 2-0 friendly win over Panama in Buenos Aires on Thursday (March 23). He scored the 800th goal of his professional career with a free-kick in the 78th minute, 11 minutes after scoring the opener from a rebound from Thiago Almada.
After the conclusion of the competition, the Argentine players celebrated with the fans at the Estadio Monumental. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winners were also later joined by their families and each player proceeded to lift a replica of the famous trophy.
Speaking in the post-match chat, Messi thanked his fans, saying:
“I want to thank you all for the love we are receiving. We told you that we are going to do everything possible to win the trophy. Let’s enjoy this moment as we win it without Gone for a long time, and we don’t know when we’ll win it again.”
Later, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner thanked Argentina supporters for their undying support. He wrote on Instagram:
“Many times I imagined what it would be like to come back to my country as world champion but now I don’t have words to describe what I feel, how grateful I am to all the people for their love. .. It’s a very, very special day and I can only tell you that I am very happy to see all of Argentina enjoying and celebrating what was another success for all. Thank you!!!
Messi, who is just one short of the 100-goal mark for Argentina, is likely to be back in action next Tuesday (March 28) against Curacao.
