Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. confirmed this week that a member of his congressional staff was “brutally assaulted” over the weekend and that a suspect was arrested in connection with the crime.
The associate was stabbed to death shortly after 5 p.m. on H Street in northeast DC on Saturday and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement on Monday. The department arrested DC resident Glynn Neal, 42, as a suspect in the assault, charging Neal with assault with intent to murder.
“This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, DC,” Paul wrote in Monday’s statement. To the first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent work. We are relieved to hear that the suspect has been arrested. At this time, we will ask for privacy so that everyone can focus on healing and recovery.”
Paul’s office did not publicly identify the employee. NBC Washington reported that an uncle identified the victim as 26-year-old Phillip Todd.
Bureau of Prisons records showed that Neal had been released from federal prison just the day before the attack. D.C. Superior Court records show Neal was sentenced in March 2011 to 12 years in prison for luring two women into prostitution.
