Brazil put in their best performance of the tournament to beat Serbia 2-0 as they became favorites to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But it won’t be all smooth sailing when the Selecao face Group G joint leaders Switzerland in their next game.
The foot injury Neymar picked up against Serbia is serious enough to rule him out of the entire group stage and it remains to be seen what Brazil’s attacking force will look like without him. It’s already missing a starter (Danilo), and the flu bug could cause more havoc.
Meanwhile, Switzerland is an established team with consistent performance from game to game. They were far from world-beaters in a 1-0 win against Cameroon, but the Swiss are impressive and easy to work with.
They have presented issues to Brazil in the past, including a 1-1 draw in the 2018 World Cup group stage that featured several projected starters on Monday. Brazil’s all-time record against the Swiss is a modest 3W-2L-4D.
After Serbia and Cameroon played out an exceptionally entertaining 3-3 draw, the winner of Brazil vs. Switzerland stands to book a place in the round of 16.

Brazil vs Switzerland Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
FULLTIME: Brazil had to be patient tonight but Casemiro’s late goal finally broke Switzerland’s resolve as they booked their place in the round of 16. The European side need a result against Serbia to join their rivals in the knockout stages, while Brazil must advance to the next round with France.
90+4 mins: More great work from Manuel Akanji, with the Swiss running in to block Rodrigo’s effort from behind.
90+3 mins: Brazil put Switzerland a man ahead, Vinicius Junior making it two for one with a superb Gabriel Jesus touch. Manuel Akanji does well to catch the ball before he gets on one leg to win it.
90 mins: Switzerland add six minutes to find an equalizer, although a second looks more likely for Brazil at this stage.
83 minutes: Goal! This time the goal! Vinicius Junior is at the heart of it, flicking the ball on for Casemiro, whose half-volley takes a nick past Manuel Akanji as it heads into the far corner of the net!

81 min: Switzerland is all behind the ball, trying to close down all the space on the edge of their area. They will now take away your hand for a point! Antony’s corner was half-cleared by Yann Sommer, then cleverly recovered to gather Bruno Guimaraes’ effort on the rebound.
77 min: Brazil has just lost their rhythm, although they could have saved themselves for a final scramble…
75 min: And now Haris Seferovic and Michel Abischer are on for Switzerland, with Brel Embolo and Dibril So players to depart.
73 min: Another double change, this time for Brazil. Gabriel Jesus and Antony are there for Richarlison and Rafinha.
71 min: If you’re wondering how close the offside call was against Richarlison for Vinicius Junior’s goal… not close!
69 min: Brazil are piling up the pressure now, Switzerland can’t get out of their own half, Alex Sandro’s whipped cross almost coming in at Casemiro at the far post.
65 mins: But no! Richarlison was offside in the previous move and after a lengthy VAR check, Vinicius Junior’s effort was disallowed!
64 min: Brazil breakthrough! Rodrigo set up Vinicius Junior down the left and rode the challenge of Nico Alvedi before slotting the ball past Yann Sommer.

60 min: Switzerland has men here but Edmilison Fernandes opts to find Djibril So instead of shooting himself or finding Brael Embolo, who was probably the best option, the shot is blocked.
58 min: Another attacking change for Brazil comes on for Bruno Guimaraes Fred. Switzerland has made a double substitution, with Renato Steffen and Edimilson Fernandes coming on for Ruben Vargas and Fabian Ridder.
56 min: What a ball from Vinicius Junior! Rodrigo feeds his Real Madrid colleague down the right and a brilliant cross with the outside of his right foot is almost pulled in by Richarlison.

54 min: Possibly Switzerland’s best move so far, spreading the play wide to Sylvan Widmer in space down the right. His low cross towards Fabian Ridder was cut out but Ridder swept the loose ball for a blocked shot.
52 min: A second yellow card quickly follows, with Fred overstretching to try and recover the ball after miscontrolling and only managing to trip Djibril Saw.
50 min: First yellow card of the night for Fabian Ridder, who uses his arm to block Rodrigo’s run and catch the Brazil substitute on the chin with a thrown hand.
49 min: Brazil are certainly trying to inject more urgency into the game, although Eder Militao is a bit too enthusiastic here, giving Ruben Vargas a foul.
46 min: We’re back and it’s a halftime switch for Brazil. It is also an attacker, Rodrygo coming in for Lucas Paqueta.
Halftime: It’s halftime after Manuel Akanji flicks in a Ruben Vargas corner from the right and Brazil finally manages to clear it. No goals at the halfway mark, which has become a regular feature at Qatar 2022; Brazil will hope to pick up the tempo after the break.
44 mins: The last man to win a World Cup for Brazil is at home…

43 min: Brazil has had the lion’s share of possession in the last 15 minutes or so, but Switzerland still looks relatively uncomfortable at the back. How long will things stay this way?
39 min: It’s a good cross for Switzerland, Ricardo Rodriguez going into space down the left and picking out Ruben Vargas in the area. A clever turn takes him away from Thiago Silva, but the Brazilian has the body back and he’s in the crowd.
37 min: There’s a definite feeling Brazil is running under a bit of steam. Alex Sandro and Vinicius Junior combined down the left, the latter playing a square pass for Ader Militao, whose shot looped behind.
34 min: Switzerland is trying to keep possession at this point, breaking the tempo Brazil was just starting to build.
31 min: Raphinha gets up here, coming out the flank and exchanging passes with Eder Militao, before trying his luck from 25m. This shot is straight at Yann Sommer but it’s more positive from Brazil.
27 min: Big chance for Brazil! Raphinha has been quiet so far but you can’t give him that amount of space, with the Barcelona winger glancing down the right and drifting in a perfect cross for Vinceus Junior at the far post. The winger has plenty of space but can’t make the proper contact, the ball bouncing off his shin, though Yann Sommer still needs to make a save at the near post.

25 mins: A good spell in possession for Switzerland but their crossing is still off the mark and Djibril is the latest, Thiago Silva cutting the ball easily into the box.
22 mins: We’re light on the goalmouth incident at the halfway point of this first period, but hopefully the first goal is just around the corner…
19 min: It’s not too far, Lucas Paqueta working enough space down the left to fire in a low cross that Richarlison is beaten by Manuel Akanji.
18 min: With Neymar absent, Brazil lack someone to pick up the ball and drive in defense. Switzerland has thus far maintained its shape with little difficulty.
15 min: Casemiro trips Brel Embolo and Switzerland take a free-kick 35 meters from the goal in a central position. Remo Freuler and Granit Xhaka opt to lay the ball wide for Ruben Vargas, whose cross is cleared.
13 mins: There’s a bit of magic from Lucas Paqueta, sending Richarlison away for the first time. The Spurs striker breaks down the right but lacks numbers in the box and his ball is cut toward Vinicius Junior.
And then Casemiro and Fred combine to play in Richarlison, whose touch is too heavy, and the ball bubbles behind.
10 min: It’s been a confident start by Switzerland, although Brazil seems to be biding its time. Richarlison almost catches them out as he bursts into life, but his pass is intercepted.
6 min: Switzerland has had a bit of fun in the opening few minutes, causing Brazil some problems with first-time flicked balls into the channels. One such move brings them a corner, but Ruben Vargas can’t clear the first man. a waste
4 min: Switzerland can’t do it too often. Richarlison was left with plenty of space inside the penalty area to meet Alex Sandro’s whip free-kick from the right but failed to get enough of his header. An early warning though.
3 mins: Still waiting for this one with neither side able to establish the pattern of the game yet. Switzerland holds the record here at Stadium 974.
Kickoff: Switzerland get us started; Which of these teams will win two out of two?
3 minutes from kickoff: The teams come out of the tunnel, and here we go with the anthem.
