If Portugal can beat Uruguay in the match of Group H favourites, there is a possibility of reaching the Round of 16.
Fernando Santos’ side beat Ghana 3-2 in one of the more entertaining group openers and another three points will see them in pole position to progress to the next stage and win the group.
Meanwhile, Uruguay were held to a 0-0 draw by South Korea and will be keen to jumpstart their attack led by Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and former Anfield star Luis Suarez. But the forward duo couldn’t do much on serve against South Korea.
Portugal have a very attacking flair and it showed against Ghana, with Cristiano Ronaldo becoming the first player to score in five World Cup competitions. They will be challenged by Uruguay’s stingy defenders but would love nothing more than to get some payback for their round of 16 elimination at the hands of La Celeste four years ago.

Portugal vs Uruguay Live Update, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Fulltime: Portugal advanced to the Round of 16 thanks to a second-half brace from Bruno Fernandes, while Uruguay’s hopes of progressing from Group H depend on them beating Ghana in their final game and South Korea not doing the same to Portugal.
90 + 9 min: And this time Bruno Fernandes is denied by the base of the upright as he lines up a shot from the edge of the penalty area!

90+8 mins: Bruno Fernandes is denied a hat-trick by Sergio Rochet’s left foot, with the goalkeeper stopping a fierce volley from a tight angle at his near post.
90 + 6 mins: Portugal is happy to playtime now, while Uruguay is the beaten side.
90+3 min: Goal! No mistake from Bruno Fernandes, who sends Sergio Rochet the wrong way from the spot. The goalkeeper dives to his left as the ball goes to his right, and of course that’s the point for Portugal.

88 mins: Bruno Fernandes wants a penalty for handball as he’s been dribbling. The ball hits Jose Maria Gimenez’s left arm as he goes for a challenging groundout … but what he says is another question.
85 min: Just as Uruguay look to be working at a head of steam ahead of the closing stages, Portugal manage to slow down the tempo and check their pace.
82 min: Ronaldo, Joao Felix and William Carvalho depart for Portugal. Joao Palhinha, Goncalo Ramos and Matheus Nunes are all active.

81 min: Solid work from Joao Cancelo, beating Luis Suarez with a right-wing cross, but Uruguay are going for it now.
79 min: Turn to deny Giorgio de Arascaeta, pushing an under-hit shot to his right after a pass from Federico Valverde to his right as the backline stood up.
77 min: All hands are pumped for Portugal now, with Joao Felix going into the book for a trip on Luis Suarez, who certainly let the referee know he was fouled there. A free kick played at pace by Giorgian de Arascaeta broke the ball for Suarez who fired wide.
75 min: Maxi Gomez is really unlucky here, with Facundo Pelestri’s direct run giving Portugal a headache and his fellow substitute only parrying a curling effort.

Uruguay was this close to tying things up 😬 pic.twitter.com/9mec7rVq3b
72 min: As time runs out for Uruguay, they make two changes up front; Darwin Nunez and Edinson Cavani are out, Luis Suarez and Maxi Gomez.
69 min: Ruben Neves, still not moving brilliantly after that heavy tackle 15 minutes ago, makes way for Rafael Leo, who came on to score on his debut against Ghana.
65 min: Update on goal, as Uruguay continue to press for a leveller; FIFA have reviewed it and decided there was no touch from Ronaldo, so it’s Bruno Fernandes who gets the credit!
63 min: Some good luck now for Diogo Costa, the Portugal goalkeeper takes too long on his clearance and is lucky to see Federico Valverde’s ricochet spin away from his own goal.
62 mins: Double change for Uruguay, Giorgio de Arasqueta and Facundo Pellistri coming on for Diego Godin and Matias Vecino.
60 min: Uruguay try to pick themselves up at the back, Darwin Nunez firing a shot straight at Diogo Costa from outside the penalty area.
58 min: It’s a good half-chance for Edinson Cavani, whose movement takes him away from Pepe but, after creating space, he misses his kick.
57 min: Ronaldo is down after being challenged by Darwin Nunez, but the Uruguayan striker looks to take the ball.
54 min: Goal! He’s done it again! Bruno Fernandes collects the ball down the left and Ronaldo, playing for Guillermo Varela, ghosts in front of a defender to flick a header past Sergio Rochet!

RONALDO 🔥

Portugal takes the lead! pic.twitter.com/SEoyQs6ETd
52 min: OFF! On halfway Uruguay lose the ball and suddenly Portugal are going forward, with Bernardo Silva playing Joao Félix on the left. His first touch took him just wide, however, and the shot flew into the near-post and into the side-netting and Bruno Fernandes screamed for a pass at the far post.
51 mins: Ruben Neves needs a long spell of treatment after that foul, and limps off before returning. His knee may have twisted on the landing.
49 min: Two fouls for the price of one here, Matias Vesino sends Ruben Neves through before Matias Oliveira gets a yellow card, through Joao Felix. The definition of pushing your luck, that.
46 min: Portugal’s front pair of Ronaldo and Joao Felix put us ahead again, with no changes from either side. Will the attitude change from both of us?
Halftime: Portugal had most of the ball but Uruguay had the best chance through Rodrigo Bentacur. Neither side has yet done enough in an attacking sense.
45 min: We’ll have three more minutes at the end of this first half.
44 min: Mathias Oliveira is the latest player to make a first-half save, stopping Bruno Fernandes as the Portugal midfielder tries to take a quick free-kick.
42 min: Nuno Mendes is in some trouble as he walks on. Rafael Guerrerio comes to take his place.

40 mins: Nuno Mendes, who was a doubt for this game with a muscle injury, goes down and needs a long spell of treatment. Doesn’t sound too good.
37 mins: Is the game opening up? Now Portugal’s turn to threaten, Ronaldo’s great awareness allows the ball to drop over the head of his marker and control it on his chest, but the shot doesn’t fall fast enough to get away and he’s out of the crowd.
35 min: Rodrigo Bentacur is suddenly looking Uruguay’s main threat, getting on the end of a low Mathias Oliveira cross from the left. He can’t connect cleanly this time and dribbles the ball back.
33 minutes: Chance! Rodrigo Bentacur picks up the ball inside his own half and drives into the heart of the Portugal defense, somehow rounding three markers to find himself beaten only by Diogo Costa. The goalkeeper stretched himself and Bentakur’s shot hit his body.

31 mins: Slightly more promising for Uruguay, with more support for the front two and continued spells of possession, though without threatening to find a way through the Portugal defense.
28 min: Uruguay is putting almost nothing together as an attacking force so far, with Darwin Nunez and Edinson Cavani starved of service.
25 min: It looks like a Portugal goal is only a matter of time as Nuno Mendes whips in a low left-wing cross which Bernardo Silva narrowly fails to control. He might be better off leaving him behind for Joao Felix.
22 min: Portugal has asked all the questions so far, with Uruguay’s 3-5-2 matching the 8-0-2 for much of the time.
Ronaldo’s left-wing cross signaled another spell of Portuguese pressure and the South American side was pressed into their own area, but the weight of numbers kept Portugal at bay.
19 min: Portugal is now dominating both possession and territory. Uruguay got off to a bad start.
16 min: Ronaldo has already been full of moves and flicks this evening, producing a quick flurry of stepovers down the left before releasing the ball. Going back years there.
Portugal certainly looked dangerous, with Joao Felix’s shot looping past Jose Maria Gimenez.
13 mins: This starts and Rodrigo Bentacur is already running a good line here. He has already booked Ruben Neves, which has not escaped the attention of the Portuguese players. Tottenham needed the man calm and soon.
11 min: First chance for Darwin Nunez to stretch his legs, three defenders taken by the Liverpool forward, who wins the bottom left corner. Jose Maria Gimenez rose highest to meet it, but the ball went into the top of the net.
7 min: A good crossfield ball from Nuno Mendes finds Ronaldo on the right, and an errant climb brings a knockdown for Bruno Fernandes, who drags a shot wide from 25 meters.
6 min: Uruguay concede three free-kicks in just over a minute, the last, for a foul on Rodrigo Bentacur on Ruben Dias, bringing an early yellow card.
3 min: With Mathias Oliveira’s first sight of goal, the Uruguayan wing-back plays the ball into Edinson Cavani and accepts a pass that only lashes over from the edge of the area.
4 minutes: Still got it! Ronaldo produces a remarkable lay-in by shouldering William Carvalho inside the penalty area, but the Portuguese midfielder can’t keep his volley down.

Portugal vs Uruguay lineup, team news
