Police said one person was killed, another was injured and dozens fled to safety in a crowded Miami Beach neighborhood on spring break.
The Miami Beach Police Department tweeted that two people were shot Friday night and one person was taken into custody. It is not clear whether the person captured was the shooter. Police also said that three guns were recovered.
The shooting took place on South Beach’s Ocean Drive, which along its busiest part is closed to vehicle traffic as hundreds of people gather to celebrate spring break. Police said one of the victims died in the hospital and the other person is in critical condition. His identity was not immediately released.
Dozens of people scrambled to avoid the gunfire, officials said. Several blocks in the area have been cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.
No other information was immediately available.
The South Beach spring break shooting is the second in as many years. Last year, the city imposed a midnight curfew after two shootings on Ocean Drive as well.
The year before that, there were nearly 1,000 arrests and dozens of guns confiscated during a rowdy spring break, prompting Miami Beach officials to take steps aimed at calming the situation.
