Bukayo Saka scored a goal in each half as England beat Iran 6-2 to strengthen their World Cup Group B campaign.
Gareth Southgate’s call to start Saka ahead of Manchester City’s Phil Foden was backed up, while his decision to stick with stalwarts Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling despite his poor club form also paid dividends.
Sterling made it 3-0 at half-time after Jude Bellingham headed in his first international goal and Saka fired into the top corner from Maguire’s knockdown.
Mehdi Taremi put Iran in the lead midway through the second half and scored a penalty deep into stoppage time, but more strikes from Saka and substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish once again showed Southgate’s England’s taste for tournament football.
Iran Vs England Score:
| Team | 1H | 2H | Final |
| England | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| Iran | 0 | 2 | 2 |
Goals:
ENG – Jude Bellingham (Luke Shaw) – 35th minute.
ENG — Bukayo Saka (Harry Maguire) — 43rd minute.
ENG — Raheem Sterling (Harry Kane) — 45th minute +1.
ENG — Bukayo Saka (Raheem Sterling) — 62nd minute.
IRN — Mehdi Taremi (Ali Gholizadeh) — 65th minute
ENG — Marcus Rashford (Harry Kane) — 71st minute.
ENG — Jack Grealish (Callum Wilson) — 89th minute.
IRN — Mehdi Taremi (penalty) — 90th minute+13.
Carlos Queiroz’s plan to spoil and frustrate his Iran side went up in smoke after half an hour, not helped by a head injury that forced goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand out of action.
After Maguire slapped a Kieran Trippier corner against the crossbar, Beiranvand’s substitute Hossein Hosseini had no chance when Luke Shaw’s cross was headed in by Borussia Dortmund midfielder Bellingham.
Iran looked uncomfortable in England’s set pieces in the first half and Saka made it 2-0 with Maguire’s knockdown.
It got worse for Queiroz’s men when Sterling, who failed to score in England’s run to the Russia 2018 semi-finals, volleyed home Harry Kane’s cross.
The Chelsea winger turned provider when he found Saka after the hour mark and Kane combined in similar fashion with Rashford to make an immediate impact from the bench as Manchester United’s favourites.
Taremi headed home from the crossbar in the middle of those goals and a stoppage-time penalty was awarded to John Stones, who was severely punished by VAR for an infringement on John Stones in the corner. At that point, Callum Wilson teed up Grealish after the brilliant Bellingham tore Iran apart with a superb through ball. It was a statement of England’s intent.

England vs Iran Live Update, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Full time: No time for kickoff for England. Silly finished there, but Southgate and his players can be very satisfied after playing with an irrepressible swagger. Saka was the hero with two goals and Bellingham looks like a player who can help this team take the next step. Thanks for joining us!
90th min+13: GOOAAALLL!! Taremi!!!
Iran’s number nine sent Pickford the wrong way. He is tied with Saka and Ecuador’s Enner Valencia at the top of the Golden Boot.
Can we all go home now, please?
90th minute+11: Penalty to Iran! That looks absurd compared to Maguire’s challenge, which came back in the second minute.
90th min+10: VAR check, possible penalty to Iran. Will this game ever end? John Stones is the most likely culprit for pulling the shirt. But it will be soft.
90th min+8: Ajmon crashes through the goal. The ball hits the crossbar. Replays suggest Pickford got a fingertip on it – a stunning save.
90th minute: Blamey, 10 minutes stoppage time. Officials sticking stickers for regulations are doing Iran no favors.
89th minute: GOOOAAALLLLLL!!!!! Grealish!!!
Bellingham tears apart Iran’s backline with a brilliant through ball. Wilson’s pace at the back is not something Iran are equipped to deal with at this stage. He flicks it back to Grealish for a simple finish.
86th minute: There’s no booze on the pitch at this World Cup but plenty of champagne stuff from England as Foden’s backheel almost sets up Rashford.
85th minute: A group of Iranian bodies threw themselves into the path as Rashford breezed into the area again. They need this to end soon. At least there it will be half as much injury time!
77th minute: Taremi breaks in again but tries to welt the ball up to Doha and his shot goes wide.
76th minute: Azmon is the star man for Iran. Perhaps things would have been different had he been fully fit but his team-mates have made a very tough case to make it. Although Kane did not score, England’s captain is excellent. Wilson comes on and he will fancy a goal.
71st minute: GOOOAALLLLLL!!!! Rashford!!!
Simple as you like! Ken is deep in his traditional style. He found Rashford, who slotted home left-footed to claim his first goal in a major tournament.
70th minute: Iran sensed an opportunity with this unplanned man advantage and attacked England on the right. Nurollahi wide fire. Pickford fumes at the referee. Now changes happen. Sterling, Saka and Mt are the other men making the way.
68th minute: We have yet to restart after that Iran goal. Maguire is looking very dazed and he’s leaving. It is part of a quadruple change for England, with Dire Foden, Grealish and Rashford coming in. Much to England’s dismay, despite booting the ball out from the kickoff, the referee doesn’t allow the subs to come on and they are playing with 10 men.
65th minute: GOOOAAALLL!!!! Taremi!!!!
Iran is on board. Taremi subs in form a pass from behind Harry Maguire, runs through Gholizadeh and the crossbar.
64th minute: Deckchairs and Queiroz make another change in titanic scenes. Mahdi Torabi is suspiciously happy to join the failed damage-limitation act.
62nd minute: GOOOAALL!!!! Saka!!!!
Two for the Arsenal star, who collects Sterling’s pass, cuts inside and clips a deflected shot into the far corner. Training ground stuff.
61st minute: Ezatolahi drives a harmless daisy cutter wide for Iran. Pickford shouts to his friends in England, perhaps to remind them that he is still there.
60th minute: There is a flow to England’s game that has been lacking for some time. Saka comes to the field. Bellingham breaks into Iran’s box. Here Shaw comes charging forward. His drive is blocked but the threat is coming from everywhere and the usually unyielding Iran can’t get a handle on things.
56th minute: Good interplay between Sterling and Kane. Sterling looks set to drop one or two back but Majid Hosseini faces a significant challenge. This is the next corner. Shaw’s delivery was followed by a foul and Iran were awarded a free-kick.
51st minute: Trippier hits it over the wall. Kane is back on his feet but England’s comfortable lead means there is no need to take unnecessary risks. Trippier himself is now down. Southgate wants to ensure that growing Iranian frustration does not take out any of his key men.
48th minute: Pouraliganji steps in and catches Kane on the leg. That looks bad and the England captain is getting treatment. When we resume, you think Trippier likes the look of the free-kick a lot.
46th minute: We’re going back. Southgate is in the luxury position of being able to give the rest of his team minutes, it seems more or less in the bag. Iran can expect to see Bellingham’s back soon.

Halftime: Finally, after a half that lasted almost an hour. It will feel too long for Iran’s beleaguered players. England had understandable concerns going into this match and there will be tough tests to come. But Southgate, his staff and his players have shown they know exactly how to play tournament football. They were brilliant in that half, with all the coach’s questionable selections, from Maguire to Sterling, fully vindicated.
45th min+10: Trippier slips the ball into some trouble with the best half of a Newcastle defender. Iran attacked but Jahanbakhsh’s volley was too much.
45th+1 min: GOOOAALLLLLL!!!! Sterling!!!

And can’t stop for even one of them. England broke Iran apart down the right, Kane crossed and Sterling did what he failed to do during Russia 2018 and scored a World Cup goal.
45th minute: Very humiliating news for Iran as there will be 14 minutes of injury time.
43rd minute: GOOOAAAAALLLL!!!! Saka!!!
Wallop! Iran is struggling to catch Maguire once again. The ball falls to Saka and he crashes it into the top corner from 15 yards.

35th minute: GOOOAAAAALLL!!!! Bellingham
Lift off for England. More intense interaction from Southgate’s side. Sterling plays Shaw on the left. The fullback crosses and Bellingham perfectly folds his run to head home.

ENGLAND TAKES THE LEAD

On the biggest stage Jude Bellingham scores his first goal for England 🔥🏴 pic.twitter.com/4TOWEHaMmQ
32nd minute: Crossbar! Maguire rises high and presses once more. Another great Trippier delivery.
31st minute: England almost have trouble on the edge of their box but Bellingham get their feet in and they’re away at the break. Sterling pulls out a lovely nutmeg and England have another corner. Perhaps, the referee has just had a word about holding.
30th minute: Big chance for England! Saka and Trippier combine sharply down the right again. The Arsenal man cuts in a low cross and the mount side crashes into the net. He should at least test the goalkeeper.
27th minute: Saka’s cross gives Hossein Hosseini his first. He claims it cleanly and the Iranian fans roar.
22nd minute: Promising free kick for Iran on England’s right. Jahanbakhsh duffs the cross straight to Trippier.
17th minute: Beiranvand’s nose bleeds again. This is inappropriate in the extreme. Iran’s number one is now flat on his back in the six-yard box. He is holding his head. Hussain Hosseini will now make his competitive international debut.
15th minute: Wait, it looks like Beiranvand is going to release. He changes his shirt and leaves. He looks unsteady on his feet and it really sounds like a bad idea for all concerned. Once again, the approach to football criticism is, frankly, pathetic and not fit for purpose.
12th minute: Beiranvand is still down. It’s not looking good for Iran’s number one as understudy Hossein Hosseini goes through some warm-ups on the touchline. Besides his prowess between the posts, Beiranvand could prove to be an attacking weapon for Iran as the match went on. He holds the record for the longest goalkeeping throw in football. Usually, he can start it on the edge of the opposition penalty area. This is ridiculous.
Iran GK Alireza Beiranvand holds the record for the longest throw by a goalkeeper. Something to watch out for ahead of the US' final group match. Dude is like Iranian Josh Allen 🇮🇷🏈pic.twitter.com/Wt2OkmZA6t

9th minute: Iran’s goalkeeper is being treated and has a nosebleed. After that daring intervention, Bayranvand had a terrible confrontation with his defender Hosseini. Medical staff is running through concussion protocols.
8th minute: Trippier catches Iran with a quick free-kick to Kane. The captain puts in a dangerous cross and Beyranvand gets a vital touch with Sterling hiding. Maguire can’t turn home at the far post.
6th minute: Mount gets into a dangerous little pocket between the lines. Shaw’s cross toward Saka is cleared but that’s it for the Chelsea man.
4th minute: Well, that looked like something close to a bear hug on Maguire. The snafu was also stoned. VAR decides that everything is fine.
2nd minute: Good start from England. Fullbacks are getting better and better. One of them, Trippier, will deliver the corner from the left. Maguire takes a tumble and calls for a penalty. He might have a point, you know…
3 minutes from kickoff: The players are out on the pitch and the anthems are playing. Tracksuit still on, no sign of Kane’s armband yet. Iran fans in the stadium gave a hostile reception to their own anthem against the backdrop of atrocities at home.
5mins from kickoff: Remember this absolute hero from four years ago? He started today…
😬 Stoppage-time. 1-0 down. Against Spain. At the 2018 #FIFAWorldCup.

😅 Milad Mohammadi decides to pull out the roly-poly throw-in!
🇮🇷 Will we see more of the same against England today? pic.twitter.com/klCF8ZAR75
20 minutes from kick-off: Queiroz, a valued member of Alex Ferguson’s coaching staff at Manchester United, already seems to be trying to soften England up with too much mercy.
40 minutes from kickoff: It looks like a 5-4-1 for Iran, with Carlos Queiroz likely to tap into the value of career practicality. Dangerman Azmoun starts on the bench. Porto striker Mehdi Taremi will plow the lone furrow up front.
1 hour from kickoff: Here we are, the England squad has been reported. Maguire, Saka, Mount and Sterling all start.

1 hour 30 minutes from kickoff: Team news will be upon us soon, with reports in England suggesting Gareth Southgate will revert to a 4-3-3. That means Mason Mount, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling will start for Manchester City’s Phil Foden the odd man out in support of captain Harry Kane.
Preparations complete. 💪 pic.twitter.com/OajWZCLNDA

2 hours from kickoff: Iran have been impressive during qualifying, winning eight of 10 games in the final round to secure top spot in Group A and an automatic berth in Qatar. They have some significant experience at the back, including captain Hajsafi, but Ajmon is undoubtedly the star turn. England beware!
2 hours 30 minutes from kickoff: In that context, the idea of trying to win the World Cup seems like small fry. As for Iran, it’s probably better than them, but they have the ability to cause England some problems today. Not if star striker Sardar Azmon is fit to play. The Bayer Leverkusen striker is nursing a muscle injury, and he will be a game-time decision for Iran coach Carlos Queiroz.
