The two highest-seeded teams in Group A at the 2022 World Cup — No. 18 Senegal and No. 8 Netherlands — are expected by many to be the decisive matchup to determine the likely group winner.
Each team is missing a key player in this game. The defending African champions are without captain Sadio Mane, who pulled out of camp with an injury that required surgery. The Netherlands are without their top scorer, Memphis Depay, to start the game as he works his way back to full fitness, but he could be an option off the bench.
The Netherlands, who failed to qualify for the last World Cup, have not lost their World Cup opener since 1938 but Senegal are eager to take another step on the world stage after failing to get out of their group in 2018, losing to Japan on fair play points in a tiebreaker.

Senegal vs Netherlands Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
60th minute: With Senegal’s Abdou Diallo receiving some treatment, it looks like the Netherlands are preparing Memphis Depay for action.
58th minute: The game has gone a bit stale but Senegal spring into life, a ball from the left reaches Crepin Diata at the far post, but the striker is always stretching and can’t turn it on goal.
53rd minute: Another corner from the Netherlands, and it’s a chance! But Virgil van Dyk led it. The Liverpool defender was expected to do better than that.
50th minute: Cody Gakpo’s pace earns the Netherlands a corner, but Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy gathers it comfortably.
48th minute: The Dutch didn’t qualify for the last World Cup but they arrive at this one in confident mood. Coach Louis van Gaal, who led them to the semi-finals and finished third in 2014, openly stated his belief that they have a “great chance of becoming world champions” in Qatar. They haven’t seemed to justify that position yet…
46th minute: The players are back at the Al Thumana Stadium and here we go again…
Half time: Senegal 0-0 Netherlands
45th minute: Netherlands on the counter after clearing a Senegal corner, but the final pass is too long for Steven Bergwijn. We will have two minutes of added time at the end of this first half.
41st minute: Senegal had a chance to create something with a free-kick on the left side of the penalty area, but Idrissa Gueye’s delivery failed to beat the first defender. Poor from Everton man.
39th minute: Good move from the Dutch as Frenkie de Jong brings the ball out from behind. It comes to Vincent Janssen on the edge of the area, but his left-footed snap-shot flies narrowly wide.
33rd minute: Straight back up at the other end, and Youssef Sabali drills in a right-footed effort from distance but it doesn’t trouble Andries Knoppert, scoring on his Netherlands debut.
32nd minute: Netherlands with a free-kick in a good position on the right side of the area, 30 yards out. Cody Gakpo swings it in with his right foot, but Senegal clears it easily.
28th minute: This time Senegal are in with another goal, but Idrissa Gueye pulls his shot well wide. Both sides look weak at the back, but we’re still goalless as we approach the half-hour mark.
26th minute: Corner for the Netherlands at the other end. Virgil van Dijk rises highest but can only direct his header on target.
24th minute: OFF! Great skill from Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr, who drops his shoulder to the left of the box and curls in a curling effort that Virgil van Dijk looks to head before heading for a corner.
19th minute: Another chance for the Dutch! Frenkie de Jong finds himself in space in the Senegalese area and transfers the ball to his right foot to shoot, but a defender is out to clear.
16th minute: The Netherlands present a flowing move down the right but Senegal manage to clear the danger. But immediately Cody Gakpo swings in a dangerous cross to the far post where Daley blinds up to Yusuf Sabali but his header drifts wide of the post.
9th minute: Next it’s Senegal’s Chekhau Kouyate who tries his luck at goal, but the Nottingham Forest midfielder’s left-footed effort goes harmlessly wide.
7th minute: A good ball into the Netherlands box is just wide of the outstretched leg of Senegal’s Pape Abou Cisse. A good start from the African champions.
5th minute: It’s an open start here with both teams showing good attacking intent in these opening exchanges. Promising for the Dutch as Cody Gakpo finds himself in a good position but he takes an extra touch and the chance is gone.
1st minute: Nervous start from the Netherlands! Virgil van Dijk lost possession in the Dutch half, Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr cut the ball in from the left and Boule Diale got a shot deflected by Frenkie de Jong for a corner.
1 minute from kickoff: The two captains are shaking hands in the center circle, and we’re about to go ahead. It’s the Netherlands to start… Let’s go!
5 minutes from kickoff: It’s time for the anthem at Al Thumama Stadium. We’ll start with Senegal and ‘Red Lion’, followed by Netherlands ‘Wilhelms’…
7 minutes from kickoff: If Senegal are without Mane, the Netherlands are also weakened by the absence of Memphis Depay, their team’s most prolific striker with 42 goals from 82 caps.
No other member of the squad is in double figures – Davy Klaassen is the next highest on nine – but starting today Vincent Janssen has a fair record with seven goals in 20 caps to date.
Also look out for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old is reportedly being watched by most of Europe’s top clubs, so a decent World Cup could put a move firmly on the radar.
