Poland vs Saudi Arabia Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Full time: Poland 2-0 Saudi Arabia
Poland topped Group C at the expense of Saudi Arabia.
90 min +4: The game is stopped so Al Abid can get some treatment for a sore face Lewandowski accidentally put on his knee.
90 min +2: Poland wins another corner, this time on the left. Frankowski turned it in. Al Owes made it clear.
90 min +1: First of seven bonus minutes and Poland do nothing with their corner.
87 min: Al Dawsari crosses deep from the left. Alobud rises highest to the far stick but can only waft a header into the top of the net.
84 min: Lewandowski celebrates with the air of a man who has just lifted the weight of the world off his shoulders. It has been a long time coming. When it happened, it was funny. But they all count!
Goal! Poland 2-0 Saudi Arabia (Lewandowski 82)
Robert Lewandowski finally scored at the World Cup … and it was a gift from Saudi Arabia. Al Bulahi, in the left corner of his own box, curls a pass along the line toward Al Malki in the middle. Al Malki takes his eye off the ball and lets it roll under his boot. Lewandowski put it away and beat Al Owes, simple as that!
80 min: Space for Al Ghanum down the right. He chests a long pass down and creams a cross into the six-yard box. Al Shehri dives at the near post but can’t connect. The Saudis have come very close, many times, but there is still no reward.
76 min: Al Amri is down with a sore shoulder. Come to the physio.
75 min: Saudi Arabia probe. Poland steals the ball and counter. Kaminski clears Lewandowski from the halfway line. Al Owes runs from his box and blasts the ball just in time from Lewandowski’s reach.
72 min: Poland looks more comfortable now compared to Saudi Arabia, which is a bit out of puff.
Herve Renard is his hyperactive self on the sidelines if any more unpredictability is needed.
68 min: Now Lewandowski hit the woodwork! This time it is more efficient to meet the cross from the right.
This game is fun and chaotic. It is important not to fall back on clichés and not say anything along the lines of another goal being important.
64 min: Arkadiusz Milik powers a header off the crossbar!
Poland won by almost a second all but game over. They enjoy playing at break – and it shows.
60 min: Another big thunderbolt goes up as Salem Al Dawsari shows some brilliant footwork to hold onto the ball and release it to Feras Al Briqa on the left who fires over the crossbar.
55 mins: Szczesny to the rescue again!
First Salem Al Dawsari shot over the crossbar, then Al Dawsari headed the ball home from close range. The goalkeeper failed to celebrate another great acrobatic save.
50 min: Saudi Arabia is pushing. We saw some questionable crosses early in the half, as well as an overhead kick.
Can they come from behind again?
46 mins: We’re off again! Saudi Arabia, looking to strike back, makes one change: Nawaf al-Abid is in for Sami al-Nazi.
HALF – TIME:
45 min: After a few minutes of intense drama, Poland maintained their lead!
Bilic was judged to have caught Al Shehri’s leg after the referee and VAR looked at multiple replay angles.
Salem Al Dawasari’s low penalty was saved by Wojciech Szczesny, and the goalkeeper produced a sensational second save to deny Mohamed Al Buraik.
Nerve-shredding entertainment!
40 min: Goal to Poland.
Poland has a great move in the game. Cash overlaps, Lewandowski misses his chance with a cross at the near post, and Zielinski shows him how to do it.
37 min: Ali Al Bulahi goes down briefly after seeing Lewandowski accidentally tap his arm. After some dramatic gestures from the Saudi physio he is up now.
33 min: Opportunity for Saudi Arabia! His side did well to find him with a cross after Saleh Al Shehri failed to get enough purchase on an attempted header.
29 min: This is the fifth booking since Herve Renard’s main sidekick has been booked on the Saudi Arabian bench. It’s been a spicy start to the showdown.
27 min: Now Poland has a chance! Christian Bielik sends a determined header toward goal from a corner and Saleh Al Shehri must be alert to head over the crossbar.
24 min: Robert Lewandowski is a familiar hard-working figure up front for Poland. It’s a stark contrast to the path he’s taken for most of his club career.
21 min: Abdullah al-Malki goes to the book. He will now miss Saudi Arabia’s third group game against Mexico.
18 min: Matty Cash is having a tough time on his flank. Now he has become the third player of Poland. Mexico was the last team to do so within 20 minutes of a World Cup match in 2002.
16 min: Jakub Kivier clumsily brings down Saleh Al Shehri and polices the first booking of the game. Poland looks even more desperate.
13 min: Great save from Wojciech Szczesny! Mohammed Kanno does brilliantly hold off four players, keep his composure and hammer a shot toward goal from distance only to see the springing goalkeeper tip it onto the crossbar.
10 min: Anyone who made the leap to Saudi Arabia, who were long odds to win before the game began, will be pleased with what they’ve seen so far.
They have picked up where they left off against Argentina, backed by a boisterous following.
7 mins: Matty Cash curls a harmless cross into the penalty area for Saudi Arabia, who win a corner moments later but can’t do any damage.
5 min: It’s a tough start for Poland. The roar of the fans is felt almost exclusively for Saudi Arabia, who are passing the ball cleverly in midfield and looking supremely confident.
3 min: Sami Al Naji is clearly in a mood. After seeing Robert Lewandowski held tightly by his side’s defense, he tries to create a threat in the opposition half and his appeal for a free kick is unsuccessfully brought down.
1 min: Saudi Arabia is off to a good start here. They show no signs of nerves – well they might not, after that extraordinary win over Argentina.
5 minutes from kickoff: The National Anthem is playing! We are almost ready to go.
Poland vs Saudi Arabia lineup, team news
Polish coach Czeslaw Michniewicz has indicated that he is ready to attack all out as Poland improves on the draw with Mexico.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the 52-year-old declared: “We want to play forward and play more daringly. We are ready to play our way. I think there are two equal teams.”
It has been suggested that a formation change could be on the cards for Poland, which would benefit Arkadiusz Milik.
The inclusion of another striker will certainly help prevent Barcelona man Lewandowski from being left alone as he was in his country’s opening game.
Poland (4-1-3-2 right to left): 1. Szczesny (GK) — 2. Cash, 14. Kiwior, 15. Glick, 8. Bereszinski — 10. Krychowiak —13. Kaminski, 20. Zielinski, 6. Bielik – 9. Lewandowski, 7. Milik
Saudi Arabia will be without Yasser Al-Shahrani after a sick altercation with his own goalkeeper forced him to undergo surgery during the win over Argentina.
However, he is likely to be the only absentee for Herve Renard’s side.
