France vs Denmark Final Scores, Highlights, 2022 World Cup Group D Match Results

Two of Group D’s heavyweights go head-to-head at the Stadium 974 as defending champions France take on nemesis Denmark in what could go a long way to defining the team that tops the group.

Much has been made of Denmark’s previous two victories in the UEFA Nations League against France – 2-0 in September and 2-1 in March – but Denmark had a tough time against unexpected Tunisia in their first game at this World Cup.

France looked like world champions despite losing by one goal to Australia. Kylian Mbappe showed his ability to take over games, and two goals from Olivier Giroud signaled that France could just overcome the loss of Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema, one of several players on France’s long injury list.

France vs Denmark Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights

Fulltime: France 2-1 Denmark
A thrilling game swung in Les Bleus’ favor thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s brace, securing France’s place in the round of 16 for the first nation at the 2022 World Cup.

Denmark gave it a real push, but felt second-best for much of the game in Qatar. It is revenge for France from their Nations League defeat in the summer, and Mbappe has scored in five of his nine World Cup games.

90+1 min: There will be 6 minutes of added time, as Denmark are throwing players forward. They are making another change as Christensen comes in for Alexander Bah.

The broadcast showed the semi-automatic offside technology output on Mbappe’s winner, which showed he was level with the Danish defender by a HAIR, basically Griezmann’s delivery.

86th minute: Goal! France! Did Mbappe win for France? It’s that connection again, as Griezmann’s cross meets Mbappe’s head on the doorstep, and Schmeichel can do nothing about it. The crowd explodes in Qatar and Les Bleus may have taken all three points.

81st minute: Chance, Denmark! End-to-end stuff and Martin Braithwaite should score! He meets a delivery from Kasper Dolberg on the right and beats Jules Kaunde to a cross, but he hacks it at the near post. A great opportunity!

79th minute: Chance, France! A double chance for Les Bleus! First, Aurelien Tchouameni meets a corner with a diving header, but it is blocked by Joachim Mahele. Then after recycling, Griezmann has another headed effort, and again Mahe is there to block it.

The third corner is less dangerous, but moments later, Adrien Rabiot lets it go on the bike but he sends it high. That’s not a bad effort! The goal of the competition was “Who do you think he is, Richarlison?” Jokes Fox sports commentator John Strong.

75th minute: Deschamps has seen enough to make some changes. Kingsley Coman and Ibrahima Konate came on for Ousmane Dembele and Raphael Varane. Dembele was electric in the first half but faded after the break. His replacement Coman had fitness concerns in training this week, but has proved fit to be an option off the bench.

73rd minute: Chance, Denmark! The Danes are feeling it now, and Hugo Lloris is called upon to make a huge save! It’s a point-blank header from Lindstrom. The game is open now, and both teams are looking for a winner!

68th minute: Goal! Denmark! Level behind the game against the run of the game! France hit back with a set-piece goal late in the second half when Andreas Christensen scored in the corner. It was Joachim Andersen who rose to meet the initial delivery, and his far-post flick comes alone on Christensen who leaves his head for Lloris to follow.

67th minute: Denmark are out of their shell, and France make a great move into the penalty area, but it’s turned back twice before they get a shot off. The best chance came from a cross route down the right flank from Lindström which beat a France defender and almost fell for Braithwaite and Damsgaard, but it was cleared before either could latch on.

61st minute: Goal! France! Well, it was definitely coming, and now France finally has the leadership it deserves. It’s Kylian Mbappe who plays a great one-two with Griezmann on the left edge of the penalty area. Mbappe’s effort threads perfectly through two defenders in a very tight window, and Schmeichel is screened and can’t help.

Immediately after the goal, Deschamps replaced Olivier Giroud with Marcus Thuram.

60th minute: Chance, France! How did France not score? Now it’s Griezmann with a terrible miss! He scored on the penalty spot, but he missed the chance! That should be the opening goal!

57th minute: Chance, France! Mbappe’s shot saved by Schmeichel! He completely torches one defender and then turns another to create space, but his effort at the near post from a very tight angle troubles the goalkeeper, who becomes tall and wallowing. The next corner is cleared.

54th minute: Schmeichel comes off his line and gets to the ball from deep before reaching Mbappe. He is 15 yards from his penalty area when he gets there and clears. Great performance today from Denmark goalkeeper and real captain.

50th minute: Mbappe starts the break and finds space around two defenders to feed Dembele in the penalty area. The Barcelona winger looped back over the defenders for Mbappe in a one-two, but Schmeichel came out to claim before Mbappe got to the ball bobbing in front of goal.

46th minute: Heading into the second half, a change for Denmark saw former Barcelona striker Martin Brathwaite come on for the yellow-carded Andreas Cornelius. There was no change for France, understandably, as they were the better side in the first half.

Halftime: France 0-0 Denmark
It was everything in that half but the goals. France dominated for the most part, but Denmark stood tall to the task…barely.

At the other end, Denmark had a few half-chances, but it was mostly one-way traffic. That is reflected in the expected goals table, with France collecting 0.95 xG on 13 shots, while Denmark had just two attempts for 0.05 xG. Kasper Schmeichel did very well to keep the scoreline level.

45+3 mins: Strange moment when Kylian Mbappe’s shot on goal hits Olivier Giroud’s head.

43rd minute: Yellow card for Jules Kaunde for stepping on the leg of Denmark center-back Victor Nelson, who is in pain and needs treatment.

40th minute: Chance, France! Bad miss from MBAPPE! France again breaks Dembele down the right, and the Barcelona attacker delivers a superb cut-back from the byline to Mbappe on the penalty spot. The PSG attacker has been good so far, but he skied his effort over the crossbar. The goal was broken…

39th minute: OOF Cornelius produces a highlight reel play as Theo Hernandez is nutmegged. Denmark will not back down from the defending champs!

36th minute: Denmark decides to play with momentum on the counter, and it works out their best chance of the half, but it’s into the side net from a tight angle. Lloris looked unsteady at the chance, caught a little high, and had to get back into position, but no worries.

34th minute: Denmark is hanging on by the skin of its teeth. Another attacking move with the pace required Schmeichel to make a kick-save on Griezmann’s driven cross across the face of the goal. There are some follow-up attempts for France attackers in the penalty area, but they are blocked. Denmark’s defenders put their bodies on the line, and that’s what kept France out.

30th minute: Chance, France! Kylian Mbappe weaves his way into space down the left, and his ball into the penalty area is very strong, but it comes to Jules Conde alone at the far end, the defense shadowing Mbappe’s threat. Kounde lets fly, and the far-post effort looks to beat Schmeichel, but it’s blocked by a defender before finding the back of the net.

29th minute: Denmark has a long spell of possession, thanks to a mistake on the ball by Hugo Lloris, but they offer very little threat in front of France’s goal. They are looking to slow things down and cool down the France counter, but this is coming at the cost of their attacking presence.

21st minute: Chance, France! Save what by Schmeichel! It was a sensational stop when Adrien Rabiot gave Dembele’s next delivery a poor header. France is very unfortunate not to score.

Moments later, Denmark received another yellow card, showing Andreas Cornelius when he hacked Giroud in the middle third. Those are two early caveats for Denmark, which will have to be careful going forward.

20th minute: Yellow card for Andreas Christensen, and the Barcelona center-back can count himself the lucky one, as he tees up Mbappe on the counter. This has a clear goalscoring opportunity and serious potential to deny Christensen a red, but there are two defenders with Mbappe in the tackle, so the official makes the less bad choice.

19th minute: France breaks through the Denmark midfield but they don’t have the numbers and miss a two-seven chance. Denmark isn’t in a low-block shell and is in possession well, but they don’t have the attacking venom that the defending champions have had so far, and chances of their own fall behind.

13th minute: Chance, France! On the free kick, Griezmann’s ball is over the head of Raphael Varane who breaks free and rises to meet it. Then, in the ensuing corner, it’s close again at the near post, this time Warren gets his head on it, and his flicked effort almost curls at the far post, but it’s cleared off the line.

This game has great energy on both sides!

10th minute: Chance, France! Olivier Giroud has a good look at Dembele’s cutback, but he takes the chance! It rises awkwardly from the grass near the penalty area and hits him in the chest, but he can’t stay and the chance is wasted.

9th minute: Denmark has started the game well, but now France is taking possession of the attacking third. Still no goal threat from Kasper Schmeichel. The former Leicester City goalkeeper has donned the captain’s armband in Simon Kjer’s absence.

6th minute: Watch Ousmane Dembele go! France left Les Bleus with a beautiful move to get them out of their own half, skipping two tackles and throwing defenders to the ground. He retrieves the ball at the top of the penalty area and lets the shot go, but it’s blocked.

3rd minute: Early chance for Denmark here as Chaumeni concedes a foul in the attacking third. An officiating team is a Polish group, so it’s an all-European affair in this game. The free-kick is taken short and the service is cleared in the box.

1st minute: The match is underway in Qatar! Can France secure a place in the knockout stages? Or will Denmark take control of the group?

8 minutes to kick-off: France can become the first team to qualify for the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup, but three previous teams have had the chance to do so with victory. Will the former World Cup champion set the pace?
