Lionel Messi and Argentina have their backs against Mexico at the Lusail Stadium, knowing that defeat could see them suffer a humiliating exit from the group stage.

The Albiceleste are in this position after losing to Saudi Arabia in what many have called the biggest upset in World Cup history.

Mexico would love nothing more than to knock Argentina out of the tournament, after what the Albiceleste have done to them in past editions. In consecutive tournaments in 2006 and 2010, Argentina knocked out El Tri in the last 16, although they were close.

Mexico is led by former Argentina manager Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino and Argentine-born Rogelio Funes Mori, who has long played in Mexico and is a Mexican citizen by naturalization, are members of El Tri’s squad.

Argentina vs Mexico Live Update, 2022 World Cup Highlights

Final: Argentina 2 – 0 Mexico
90th minute:
Six minutes of stoppage time.

87th minute: Goal Argentina! What a shot by Enzo Fernandez who curled the ball into the top right corner from the left side. That goal is a backbreaker for Mexico not only in this game but in the goal difference department.

81st minute: No clear ideas for Mexico. And Argentina is dangerous when they win the ball in midfield. Julian Alvarez and Leo Messi scored minutes before Aquiel Palacios won the ball.

This game doesn’t set up great for Mexico and El Tri needs to push and Argentina absorbs the pressure.

73rd minute: Mexico took out Chucky Lozano and this is their last sub. Piojo Alvarado is inside. If this decision does not work there will be questions.

69th minute: Angeli Di Maria and Alexis McAllister are out and Aquiel Palacios and Cristian Romero are there to help defend this lead.

65th minute: Raul Jimenez and Uriel Antuna are on for Kevin Alvarez and Alexis Vega. Mexico is going to have four defenders.

64th minute: Goal Argentina! Lionel Messi scored. It’s a simple pass in a central position just outside the box and nobody closes him down and he fires a left-footed shot that lows Memo Ochoa inside the right post.

63rd minute: SUBS Argentina. A double change by manager Lionel Scaloni. Julian Alvarez is on for Lautaro Martinez, while Nahuel Molina is on for Marcos Acuna.

57th minute: Sub Argentina. Enzo Fernandez comes on for Guido Rodriguez. Argentina needs the creativity of the Benfica man.

56th minute: Argentina started the half well. Contingency has picked up with the Albiceleste on the attack. But Lionel Messi just sent a pass and it went straight out for a goal kick.

50th minute: Yellow card. Mexico’s Eric Gutierrez got it for bringing down Lionel Messi outside the box. Messi takes the free kick and it’s high. You can only wonder if the knee injury he suffered against the UAE is bugging him.

46th minute: Second half underway. No change for either side.

Halftime: Argentina 0 – 0 Mexico

45th minute: Five minutes of stoppage time awarded by Italian referee Daniele Orsato.

45th minute: Chance Mexico! Alexis Vega takes the free kick after a foul on Montiel. And Argentina’ keeper Dibu Martinez knew what was coming and plucked it out of the air in front of his goal.

43rd minute: Yellow card. Argentina’s Gonzalo Montiel got it for hacking Erick Gutierrez. Clear yellow.

41st minute: Sub Mexico. Andres Guardado has to come out and he gives the captain’s armband to Memo Ochoa. He had been on the bench earlier with a calf problem. In came Eric Gutierrez from PSV Eindhoven.

41st minute: Argentina’s chance! Angel Di Maria’s cross on the right and Lautaro Martínez headed out in the middle of the box, but he didn’t make good contact and the ball went high.

39th minute: What a bad sign for Argentina supporters. Rodrigo de Paul is not playing his best in these insanely intense conditions. And he just ran out of the ball game. He is closed.

38th minute: An example of how hard every ball is fought. Check out the kick Lisandro Martinez just took to the face.

35th minute: Argentina chance. Surprise, surprise. It is in a set piece. But Mexico’ keeper Memo Ochoa takes care of that. This is the closest Argentina have come to troubling the Mexican keeper.

31st minute: Outside of a couple of Mexico set pieces, we haven’t really seen much build-up from either side with both teams battling hard in midfield. There are some strong tackles flying. But very little construction.

25th minute: Mexico is looking much better than Argentina so far. It’s almost as if Argentina is realizing how tough it’s going to be and Mexico is having fun with it. There has been no dangerous attack from Messi and the company.

22nd minute: Yellow card to Mexico’s Nestor Araújo. It was a careless challenge by center-back Marcos Acuna. Again, Mexico is super aggressive, to begin with.

21st minute: Mexico set piece. Another one was earned by Chucky Lozano. This set piece is elaborate and ineffective. Dibu Martinez comes out to collect. It was easy for him.

12th minute: Mexico is up for it! They’re getting stronger in every challenge, and Andres Guardado just went over in a slide tackle against Rodrigo de Paul along the touchline. That’s how hot it is already.

10th minute: Chance Mexico! A great set-piece delivery from Luis Chavez and the ball curls in at the far post where a sliding Hector Moreno almost makes contact, but can’t quite get there.

9th minute: First corner kick for Mexico and it’s taken poorly. It’s sent to Messi! Mexico now operates half of Argentina.

5th minute: Mexican players are furious after Alexis Vega is called for a foul as Mexico is in a quick transition. But Vega sent a high hand into the face of Gonzalo Montiel in an attempt to save the ball. There is a long pause as the doctors visit him.

4th minute: Argentina has yet to start. Lionel Messi returns to midfield to receive the ball at one point.

1st minute: We’re off. Mexico and Argentina in their traditional colors.

2 minutes from kickoff: Lionel Messi and Andres Guardado are the captains and they are participating in a coin flip with the referee. Kickoff is just moments away.

5 minutes from kickoff: The teams are out on the field. The upcoming national anthem.

Argentina vs Mexico Lineup, Team News

Manager Lionel Scaloni made five changes to the team that lost to Saudi Arabia.

Gonzalo Montiel (right-back), Marcos Acuna (left-back), Lisandro Martinez (center-back), Guido Rodriguez (central midfield), and Alexis McAllister (central midfield) start ahead of Cristian Romero. and Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez who is still not at 100 per cent fitness.

Argentina (4-3-3, right to left):

23-Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez (GK) — 4-Gonzalo Montiel, 25-Lisandro Martinez, 19-Nicolas Otamendi, 8-Marcos Acuna — 7-Rodrigo de Paul, 18 -Guido Rodriguez, 20-Alexis McAllister – 11-Angel Di Maria, 22-Lautaro Martinez, 10-Lionel Messi

Manager Tata Martino is actually moving to a 5-3-2 formation with the addition of Nestor Araújo as a third centre-back.

And with all the debate surrounding the center forward position, El Tri doesn’t use a recognized central striker to lead the line instead of the team’s two best attackers.

Mexico (5-3-2, right to left):

13-Guillermo ‘Memo’ Ochoa (GK) — 26-Kevin Alvarez, 2-Nestor Araujo, 3-Cesar Montes, 15-Hector Moreno, 23-Jesus Gallardo — 16 -Hector Herrera, 18-Andres Guardado, 24-Luis Chavez- 22-Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano, 10-Alexis Vega
