Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo have the luxury of knowing they are already safe in the last 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but there is still a lot to play for when they face South Korea today.

They may already be assured of safe passage from Group H after beating both Ghana and Uruguay, but the battle for the top spot is still on — and a potentially easy route through the knockouts.

They could rotate some of their star names for this final performance, and there is debate as to whether Ronaldo will be involved, but the risk is that they could still be relegated in defeat, and potentially face a much tougher task against Brazil in the round. of the 16th.

South Korea still has a lot to play for, knowing that only a win will see them hope to progress, and even then the goal difference could play into Uruguay’s next match against Ghana.

Portugal vs South Korea Live Update, 2022 World Cup Highlights

Full time: Portugal 1-2 South Korea

They have done it! If Uruguay can’t score with six extra minutes against Ghana, South Korea will need the win they need and put themselves on the brink of qualification.

90th minute+6: We’re in the last minute of added time…

90th min+3: Reminder of the goal means it’s the same for South Korea – until Uruguay score again against Ghana. We’ll keep you posted…

90th minute+1: Goal for South Korea! Unbelievable! A swift counter-attack from the Portuguese corner sees Sun Racing clear. He shows great composure when the Portuguese defenders close in, slips in Hwang He-chan and slides it under the keeper!

89th minute: It’s really Portugal on the attack as we enter the final knock, with Joao Cancelo weaving his way down the left before diverting his cross for a corner.

84th minute: A reminder that South Korea needs just one goal to lift Uruguay into second place in Group H. They have a corner in which Cho Goo-sung gets a headbutt, but it bounces off the top of his bonce and away to safety

81st minute: Portugal also makes a double substitution, Bernardo Silva and William Carvalho for Vitinha and Joao Mario.

80th minute: Hwang Ui-jo and Son Joon-ho are on, Kim Young-gwan and Lee Kang-in are off.

79th minute: Triple change coming from South Korea…

76th minute: Diogo Dalot should have had a chance to start the knockout stage with his performance today. A nice little stepover on the right and puts in a low cross, but none of his teammates can get on the end of it.

74th minute: Free kick in a good position for South Korea. Son and Lee Kang-in are on top of it, but the latter turns it over with his left foot.

70th minute: Son at the back post! The Spurs star hits a sweet right-footed volley, but Joao Cancelo gets his body in the way to deflect it for a corner. Half a suggestion of a handball, but it hit the side of his chest.

67th minute: Good strike from distance from Hwang In-beom, but Diogo Costa is equal. Can South Korea find the goal to secure their passage to the Round of 16?

64th minute: Triple change for Portugal, Andre Silva, Rafael Leo, and Joao Palhinha. Cristiano Ronaldo is coming along with Ruben Neves and Mathews Nunes.

62nd minute: South Korea is ready to bring on Wolves man Hwang Hae-chan, who has struggled with fitness.

55th minute: South Korea on the counterattack. A measured pass from Cho Gue-sung finds Son and he’s shot off, but Antonio Silva – as calm as you like – comes back to tip it out for a corner.

51st minute: Lovely ball behind the South Korean defense by Ronaldo from Vitinaha, who miscued the kick with his left foot. But the Portuguese superstar was offside anyway.

46th minute: Portugal hit us back in the second half.

That first half was a clearly frustrating experience for suspended South Korea coach Paolo Bento, who had to watch from the stands.

Halftime: Portugal 1-1 South Korea

Portugal took an early lead through Ricardo Horta but South Korea responded well and Kim Yong-gwan’s equalizer kept their hopes alive. Uruguay trailed Ghana 2-0 while the situation remained stable and reached second place. But South Korea need only score once to qualify ahead of Uruguay on goals.

45th minute: We will have two minutes of added time.

44th minute: Sensational bit of skill and close control in a confined space on the edge of the area from Vitinha, coming further into this game. The ball finds Ricardo Horta, but he tucks it into his shot and it goes wide.

42nd minute: Big strike from Vitinha, one of the players brought into the Portugal side today. Only Kim Seung-gyu can get past it and Ronaldo is there, sniffing a goal, and getting a head on it. But he can’t turn his neck enough to direct it towards the target.

39th minute: Lovely control from Son before moving the ball onto his left foot, but the strike is straight at Diogo Costa.

34th minute: Diogo Dalot tries his luck from long range with his left foot, and Kim Seung-gyu beats it for a corner. It has quite a bit of power behind it.

30th minute: Chance for Ronaldo? He tries to parry Kim Seung-gyu with the outside of his right boot, but the South Korean goalkeeper saves. Ronaldo was offside, so it wouldn’t have counted anyway.

28th minute: More good news for South Korea’s qualification hopes as Uruguay takes the lead against Ghana.

27th minute: South Korea is level! Portugal doesn’t deal with an inswinging corner, it falls to Kim Young-gwan at the far post and the defender fires home with his left foot.

23rd minute: Cracking ball from Mathias Nunes, finding Ronaldo, making a run at the far post, but Kim Young-gwan gets a leg as time runs out.

21st minute: News of another last-round match in Group H. Andre Ayew misses Ghana’s penalty against Uruguay. But the West African nation is still languishing in second place behind Portugal, as things stand.

16th minute: A goal for South Korea? no The assistant referee’s flag is quickly raised. Son Heung-min curls in a beautiful ball at the far post that flicks on and Kim Jin-soo taps it into the unguarded net, but the defender was clearly offside.

14th minute: Joao Cancelo hasn’t been at his best so far this World Cup, but after switching from right-back to his usual left-back role for Manchester City today, he’s looking his usual self. Cancelo deftly beat Kim Moon-hwan on the left byline and beat goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu before drilling in a cross with his right foot.

10th minute: A disastrous start for South Korea in a game they must win to have any chance of progressing to the round of 16. Portugal doesn’t tend to lose too many games once in front of their noses. But still early days…

5th minute: Goal to Portugal! He was found by Pepe on the right after a great run and cross from Diogo Dalot, and Ricardo Horta finished brilliantly at the near post. It was his second international goal in his first major tournament start.

3rd minute: A reminder that South Korea coach Paulo Bento is not on the sidelines today after receiving a red card against Ghana, so his assistant coach Sergio Costa is issuing instructions.

5 minutes from kickoff: It’s time for the anthem.

Portugal vs South Korea lineup, team news

Portugal’s coach Fernando Santos has hinted that Cristiano Ronaldo may be left out of his team to face South Korea.

A place in the knockout stages is already assured and Ronaldo could join a number of stars who missed out on a rotated selection on Friday as he sat out a training session ahead of the match.

“Let’s see. In theory, Ronaldo will train soon,” Santos said.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted in both games. There is a plan in case Cristiano is unable to play. No player is guaranteed to play all the time. If we don’t have a plan it could probably run.”

Portugal is expected to start on the 11th
(4-1-2-1-2, right to left): 22. Costa (GK) — 2. Dalot, 24. Antonio Silva, 4. Dias, 5. Guerreiro — 18. Neves — 6. Joao Palinha, 14 Carvalho – 10. Bernardo Silva – 9. Andre Silva, 11. Joao Felix

Injured: Nuno Mendes, Ottavio, Danilo Pereira
Suspended: None

Santos will be forced to make at least one change, with Nuno Mendes likely to be ruled out for the remainder of the tournament and Rafael Guerreiro his expected replacement.

If as many changes are made as expected, the likes of Diogo Dalot, Andre Silva and Joao Palinha should benefit.

South Korea launched on the 11th
(4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. S. Kim (GK) – 15. M.H. Kwon, 19. Y. Kim, 4. M. Kim, 3. J. Kim – 5. Jung, 6. Hwang – 22. Kwon, 25. Jeong, 7. Son – 9. Cho

Injuries: None
Suspended: Bento

Coach Paulo Bento will not be out for this after receiving a red card against Ghana last time out. However, he has an injury-free squad to choose from and can therefore remain in the same line-up.
