Brazilian legend Pele has been moved to the palliative care ward, where he is expected to receive end-of-life care at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. According to the Daily Mail, the football legend stopped responding to chemotherapy during his battle against bowel cancer.
The 82-year-old was admitted to the hospital last week after his condition worsened. After reports surfaced of the Brazil legend struggling for treatment, fans took to social media to call for prayers.
The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to hospital earlier this week and was in a stable condition on Thursday (December 1), the Daily Mail reported.
However, recent reports have claimed that Pele is no longer responding to treatment, leading to him being placed in palliative care. This type of care is often reserved for patients with life-threatening illnesses.
On Tuesday (November 29), Pele’s daughter Kelly Nascimento tried to play down the seriousness of the Brazil legend’s condition, saying on Instagram:
“Today there is a lot of alarm in the media about my father’s health. He is in the hospital regulating medication. There is no emergency or new serious prognosis. I will be there for the new year and promise to post some pictures.”
On Friday (December 2), a post on the legend’s Instagram account revealed that he was in the hospital but said it was for a monthly checkup. It read:
“Guys, I’m at the hospital doing my monthly visit. It’s always nice to get positive messages like this. Thank you Qatar for this tribute, and to everyone who sent me good vibes!”
