French prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into an allegation of rape against Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, a judicial official said on Monday.
The official said the investigation is being led by the prosecutor’s office in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.
A judicial source told ESPN on Monday that a 23-year-old woman went to police over the weekend and said 24-year-old Hakimi raped her. ESPN’s source said the woman did not want to press charges, but the prosecutor’s office decided to open an investigation nonetheless.
PSG officials did not respond to requests for comment, and Hakimi has not publicly responded to the allegations.
Spanish-born Hakimi, the right-back and star of Morocco’s history-making team at the World Cup, did not play in PSG’s win over Marseille on Sunday because of thigh problems.
