The upcoming film Maestro tells the love story of composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre.
Carey Mulligan plays Montealegre, and Cooper plays Bernstein in the movie, which will debut on Netflix and in certain theaters on December 20.
Netflix released the first Maestro full-length trailer on Tuesday to prepare for the movie’s debut.
However, a number of people have criticized Cooper’s choice to use a prosthetic nose while playing Bernstein, and this has angered the streaming service.
While Cooper was raised as a Roman Catholic, Bernstein was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the son of Jewish parents who had emigrated from what is now Ukraine.
Fans have criticized Cooper for choosing not to cast a Jewish actor to replace Bernstein, while others have said that Cooper’s prosthetic resembles a “caricature.”
One fan expressed outrage on Twitter, writing: “Ok, whose idea was it to give Cooper an artificial nose to play a Jewish role I just wanna talk.”
Another shouted, “What’s up with Bradley’s face! That is offensively close to a caricature of a Jewish nose and is inappropriate in so many ways. God, oh God.
Another person questioned: “How many people are working on this movie continuously and nobody is speaking up?
Who actually believed that this was a good idea? Even the prosthetics team ought to have questioned that.
Fourteenth tweet reads, “Actual #jewface – this is Bradley Cooper and his prosthetic nose in Maestro on the life and love of Leonard Bernstein.”
And a fifth echoed: “Bradley Cooper’s character in Maestro, Leonard Bernstein, does not have the film’s comical nose. Just so sick and tired of this. #JewFace.”
Others, including one user who wrote: “The world is now officially mad! “, countered the wrath was an overreaction.
Because a prosthetic nose was too large, people are becoming upset on social media! #breaking.”
