Arnold Schwarzenegger has never shied away from educating his followers about the best ways to eat and exercise in order to keep a fit body at any age. Given his dislike of tracking macronutrients, he was asked how he gained or lost weight for his movie roles. He gave his response during a recent Q&A.
He wrote, “I call it turning the dial.” “I add just a little bit or cut out just a little, perhaps cutting bread or adding bread… to see how it goes, and then turn the dial to see how much I need.”
In a previous interview, Schwarzenegger admitted that he doesn’t usually count calories. He also admitted that he frequently has “no clue” how many calories he consumes on a typical day and instead relies on how he feels and what his physical results show. Schwarzenegger said: “I really have never known anything except that I turned the dial.”
In the same Q&A, Schwarzenegger was asked how he handled weight loss during his competitive bodybuilding days and what other things he did outside of changing his diet. The Mr. Olympia winner replied, “Just a two-mile jog in the sand after my morning lift.” “Today, I didn’t cut as the boys did. I tried to maintain my leanness while gaining weight throughout the three months leading up to the competition. In contrast to modern bodybuilders, I was lighter during the off-season than during the season.
In contrast to his “garbage disposal” days, Schwarzenegger now places a larger emphasis on greens and vegetables in his diet. He now promotes a vegetarian lifestyle since it is better for the environment and his own health. He also thinks that other sources of protein are more than sufficient for muscle growth.
He recently told Men’s Health, “There’s this misconception that that’s the only way you get big and strong,” adding that as he grows older, he actually “feels better” regardless of how little meat he consumes.
