It’s been 36 years, but Canada is back at the World Cup.

Les Rouges have a tough opening test for the 2022 FIFA tournament against Group F powerhouse Belgium, who will be expected to finally live up to the hype surrounding their so-called ‘Golden Generation.

Belgium has talent but hasn’t been able to convert it into silverware. If 2022 is to be different, they must avoid a possible upset against an upstart Canada team with nothing to lose in their first men’s World Cup tournament since 1986.

This game promises to score on it. Both sides have dangerous attacking players, and the question may arise as to which backline and goalkeeper will perform standout at the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium.

Canada vs Belgium Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights

Fulltime: Belgium stormed past Canada in the first half and won with the only real piece of quality finishing from either side, with Michy Batshuayi ending the contest with just one goal just before the break. Canada couldn’t maintain the same energy in the second period but are very positive to build on for their match against Croatia on Sunday when Belgium faces Morocco.

90+3 min: Belgium is doing a good job of running down the clock here, although Canada really ran out of steam in this second half.

90 min: With Canada failing to capitalize on a corner, Belgium break and Thomas Meunier’s fierce shot hits the head of Steven Vitoria and deflects off the back of the net. Belgium will not be in a hurry to take it.

87 mins: There are a lot of tired legs and the resulting amount of space on the pitch is increasing. At one end, Cyle Larin couldn’t get his header on target. Belgium broke straight at the other end but Leandro Trossard couldn’t keep the ball in play.

85 min: From a free-kick, Kevin De Bruyne’s delivery is predictably inviting but Leander Dendanker is unable to keep his header down.

Belgium quickly regain possession and De Bruyne pushes forward again but the finish is just wide, sailing over the bar.

83 min: Alastair Johnston makes a challenge that reduces both fatigue and frustration, scissoring his legs around Lois Openda and hacking the substitute to the ground. Belgium wants more, but it’s a yellow card.

81 mins: Final throw of the dice from Canada, Liam Miller, and Jonathan Osorio coming on for Tajon Buchanan and Stephen Eustaquio.

Alphonso Davies goes to the book for a late challenge on Leandro Trossard.

80 min: Great read of the game from Thibaut Courtois, who is perfectly placed to gather Syle Larin’s header from a Stephane Eustaquio cross.

78 min: Michy Batshuayi scores for Lois Openda. As it stands, his 27th goal in 49 internationals would be enough for Belgium to open Qatar 2022 with a win.

77 min: Toby Alderweireld challenges Ciel Larin well inside the area but Canada recycles the ball and Larin sets up Jonathan David inside the area, the striker’s shot is blocked on the spin.

74 mins: Richie Laria makes way for another change for Canada, with Sam Adekugbe coming on for the final 15 minutes or so.

71 min: Canada really hasn’t been able to create much in this second period, and you just get the sense that, if a second goal is coming, Belgium is more likely to get it. Kevin De Bruyne is increasingly impressive, but Michy Batshuayi can’t control his passes.

68 min: It’s very, very good from Richie Laria, who moves past Michy Batshuayi as the goalkeeper shoots. Striker Kevin De Bruyne played but wanted too long.

67 min: Canada’s finishing lacks composure this evening, with Richie Laria the latter to slice wide from a promising position.

65 min: Amadou Onana has certainly added some energy to Belgium’s midfield, only to lose his footing at a crucial moment in the penalty area.

62 min: Leandro Trossard, enjoying a Premier League season to remember, is on for Eden Hazard, Tajon Buchanan smashing the ball over the bar.

58 min: Canada now makes a double change, with Cyle Larin and Ismail Kone coming on for Junior Hoilett and Atiba Hutchinson. It could also mean a formation switch, with Alphonso Davies moving forward.

57 mins: Another Belgium booking, Amado Onana, who has been holding his own since the break, sees yellow for a handoff on Stefan Eustaquio.

54 mins: First yellow card of the night, Thomas Meunier going to the book for an aerial challenge on Junior Hoilett.

53 mins: A very good spell for Belgium, who are moving the ball around with a lot of confidence. It ends with a weak ball of Amadou Onana, but more promising.

48 min: Stephen Eustaquio nutmegs Kevin De Bruyne and gathers a pinpoint cross onto the head of Jonathan David, but the striker pushes his effort wide. He should have done better there.

46 mins: We’re back and Belgium makes a double change at the break despite being ahead. Thomas Meunier, wearing a protective mask over his broken cheekbone, is in for Yannick Carrasco while Andre Onana replaces Yuri Tielemann.

Halftime: A chance, a goal for Belgium, who somehow lead at the break. Canada’s athleticism and pace caused all sorts of problems but they couldn’t stop the quality of Michy Batshuayi, who struck against the run of play just before half-time. Canada will be devastated to fall behind at the break, but they have plenty of reasons for optimism.

45+2 min: Another big chance for Canada as Richie Laria gets down the right and Taejon Buchanan makes a great run to get on the side of his low cross but fails to find the target, lofting the ball over the bar. The story of Canada’s first half, indeed.

44 min: Michy Batshuayi gives Belgium the lead, left-footed half-volley – too harsh on Canada, who were excellent. That said, it’s a really poor goal to concede – a long, straight pass over the top from Toby Alderweireld.

42 min: There are clear signs of Belgium’s frustration as Kevin De Bruyne and Toby Alderweireld lose the ball in midfield. No wonder how they have played in this first half; Major improvements are needed.

39 min: Can Canada get a second penalty here? Axel Witsel’s challenge on Richie Laria is clumsy and he clearly catches the Canada midfielder… but after a long pause for a VAR check, no foul!

36 min: If Canada can find a little more composure in the final third, there are certain goals for them here. They’re just rushing the last ball a bit; With a little more poise, they can turn their superiority into a tangible reward.

32 mins: And now it’s Jonathan David’s turn to threaten, getting on the end of Junior Hoilett’s perceptive cross from the right, but the striker can’t keep his header on target. All that’s missing for Canada is over.

30 mins: Alastair Johnston pushes down the right and falls under a tackle outside the area, but quickly picks himself up and hits a shot from a loose ball that Thibaut Courtois has pushed diving to his right.

27th min: A lovely play from Alphonso Davies, cutting in from the left – quick feet and a good stepover – ends with Hutchinson shooting wide.

23 min: Belgium may be struggling at the back but there is no doubting their quality up front. Eden Hazard’s deft touch sets up an attack that continues with a good Kevin De Bruyne dummy, but Michy Batshuayi’s touch is poor, allowing Atiba Hutchinson to make a crucial tackle.

21 min: Canada have shown a lot of bravery in the opening quarter of this game. They have pressed Belgium relentlessly, and they are on the front foot. Can they find the cutting edge to reward their performance, though?

18 min: It’s been a great start from Canada, albeit without a goal to back it up. Belgium has Thibaut Courtois to thank for that.

16th min: Junior Hoilett, running onto a wonderful pass from deep, drags a left-footed shot wide. Belgium has hardly taken any possessions.

10 mins: Penalty saved! Alphonso Davies comes on and puts his penalty low to the right of Thibaut Courtois, but the goalkeeper guesses right and saves, Jonathan David picks the rebound over the bar! Canada’s wait for the first goal in the World Cup continues!

9 min: Penalty to Canada! Buchanan’s shot actually clips Yannick Carrasco’s left wrist and, after a VAR check, it’s a penalty!!

6 min: It’s promising from Canada, Tajon Buchanan getting into space down the right and delivering a cross that’s met by Jonathan David, the ball rebounding as Leander Dendanker challenges.

From the corner, Buchanan’s deflected effort loops up and for a moment it looks like it’s going to loop past Thibaut Courtois, but the goalkeeper is able to hold on.

4 mins: Canada has yet to get a spell of possession here, though Stephen Vitoria shows plenty of bravery to beat Michy Batshuayi to a header on the halfway line, and clatters over for his pain.

1 min: Alastair Johnston is a very, very relieved man. His square pass is easily intercepted by the defense and suddenly Belgium is wrapped up in the goal with less than 50 seconds on the clock. Michy Batshuayi’s shot is saved by Milan Borjan, and it’s an early letoff for Canada.

KICKOFF: Jonathan David gets us started, and Canada’s first World Cup game in 36 years is underway!

1 minute to kickoff: And we’re almost ready to go!
