In the event that former President Donald Trump wins the president in November, President Joe Biden issued a warning on Saturday night about the likelihood of his choosing two new Supreme Court judges.
At a Los Angeles campaign fundraiser, Biden stated, “There will probably be two more Supreme Court nominees nominated by the incoming president.” He also mentioned that Trump had already nominated two justices who are “very negative in terms of the rights of individuals.”
According to Biden, “It’s among the scariest sections.”
Biden made his remarks while appearing with former President Barack Obama, actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts, and comedian Jimmy Kimmel at a campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles.
The president engaged in a conversation with Kimmel and Obama at the fundraising event, covering a range of policy topics. Kimmel pointed out that over two years prior, Trump’s conservative justice appointments were crucial in reversing the historic decision known as Roe v. Wade, which established a constitutional right to an abortion.
Kimmel stated, “These threats to women’s rights, birth control, and even IVF, as well as abortion rights, are not in our liberal imaginations anymore.”
“They’re very real, and nine unelected judges—among them one who flies his flag upside down—are currently making these very personal, private choices. The comic went on, referencing the scandals involving conservative Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, who came under fire for previously undisclosed travels provided by a GOP megadonor. “One of the others drives around in a $267,000 gift on vacations,” the comedian said.
“And I believe that everyone is wondering, what can we do to address this?” Kimmel queried.
“Elect me again,” Biden declared, adding that Trump would “Name two more flying flags that are inverted” and that the Supreme Court “has never been as out of whack as it is today.” That was in reference to rumors that, in the beginning of 2021, an upside-down flag was flown outside Alito’s residence.
The incident, which was instigated by the then-president’s irrational accusations of a rigged 2020 election and his unwillingness to concede, was started by some Trump supporters who were at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and they were flying an upside-down American flag.
After facing criticism over the inverted flag at his house and the other contentious flag that was allegedly flown at a different site, Alito refused to step down. Alito insisted that his wife was the one who made the decision to raise the controversial flags in letters to Congress members sent last month.
In light of the flag incident, Chief Justice John Roberts recently turned down a request to speak with Democratic senators about Supreme Court ethics.
