Police in Pearland, Texas, told NBC News on Tuesday that WBC middleweight boxing champion Jermall Charlo was taken into custody and charged with three misdemeanors: driving while intoxicated, eluding and fleeing from police, and leaving the scene of an accident involving more than $200 in damage.
In the Pearland, Texas, suburb of 12799 Broadway St., Charlo was taken into custody on Monday night.
According to police spokesperson Chad Rogers, when officers arrived following the collision, they saw the two parties engaged in a verbal altercation. Charlo did not stop and drove off in his Lamborghini. Ultimately, he was cornered by police and taken into custody. He had a blood alcohol level higher than 0.15%. In Texas, the legal limit is 08%.
After posting a $9,500 surety bond, Charlo, 33, was released from the Brazoria County Jail.
Among the best boxers in the world is Charlo. After defeating José Benavidez Jr. by unanimous decision in a catchweight match, which has a weight limit agreed upon between two divisions, in November, he is currently 33-0. Since winning by unanimous decision over Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021, he has not challenged for the middleweight title.
In September, Charlo was supposed to take on Mexican super fighter Canelo Alvarez, but the fight was called off. In the interim, Jermell Charno (35-2), his identical twin brother and the light middleweight champion of the WBC, WBA (Super), and IBF, entered and unanimously decided to lose.
