Richarlison’s rich run of goal-scoring form continued for Brazil, as the five-time winners finally broke down a determined Serbia to open their Group G challenge at the World Cup – thanks to the Tottenham striker’s wonder goal in a second-half double.
Brazil dominated possession for most of the first half but couldn’t ask too many questions of a well-drilled Serbia side. Instead, they were left to rely on individual improvements and moments of inspiration, with Neymar’s clever inswinging corner only to be clawed away by goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.
With Vinicius Junior looking the potential source of Brazil’s success down the left, his opposite winger, Rafinha, came closest to finding a way through after exchanging passes with Lucas Paqueta – only to fire his shot straight at the goalkeeper, who also made a sharp save. At the feet of Vinicius.
Brazil came out with an increased tempo in the second half, with Vanja Milinkovic-Savic having to deny Rafinha seconds after the restart, before Neymar cut wide from Vinicius’ cross.
Alex Sandro then hit a long-range effort off the post on the hour, but two minutes later, the South American side were in front. Neymar attacked early in the area, breaking the ball for Vinicius and, although Milinkovic-Savic kept out his low shot, Richarlison was on hand to turn in the rebound.
The Tottenham striker’s second goal was even more special – flicking in the air from Vinicius’ low cross before a brilliant volley that made it nine goals in his last seven internationals.
Brazil continued to push forward in the closing stages, with Casemiro curling a shot against the crossbar, but the South American side had already secured a solid opening victory.

Target! Brazil 1-0 Serbia (Richardson 63)
Richarlison continues his hot streak!
60 min: Sandro hits the post! Almost a goal out of zero. Left-back Alex Sandro, who has been quiet as an attacking force, stepped forward and cut a terrific shot from 25 yards that beat Milinkovic-Savic and bounced to hit the post.
58 minutes, Tadic’s cross was deflected behind for a rare Serbia corner. He takes it himself, curling a wicked inswinger high in the air at the near post. Another Brazilian completed a clearance beyond the far post.
57 min: Double substitution for Serbia with Ivan Ilic and Nemanja Radonjic replacing Gudelj and Zivkovic.
55 minutes: Chance for Neymar! Vinicius receives the ball on the left side of the area, looks up, and slides a precise low cross toward Neymar. He hits it the first time with his left foot, 12 yards out, and well wide of the near post. That was Vinicius’ best strength

Half time: Brazil 0-0 Serbia
Sneak peek! Tite selected five attacking players, seven if you include the full-backs, eight if you count Casemiro’s passes – but a resilient, well-organized Serbia limited them to just one clear chance for Rafinha. See you in 10 minutes for the second half.
45 min will be one minute of added time.
37 min Tadic played a pass back to the underlapping Zivkovic, whose very deep cross was headed by Mladenovic (I think). Eighth chance at best.
36 min “The days of a creative attacking Brazilian team are long gone,” writes Jeff Sachs. “What remains is the constant fouling … that characterizes South American football today.”
35 min: Chance for Raphinha! Brazil should be ahead. Rafinha swagger down the infield from the right and plays a magnificent one-two with Paqueta but curls a leg past Milinkovic-Savic from about 15 yards.
31 min Raphinha takes a corner short for Paqueta, who returns it with a stylish backheel. Raphinha crosses low at the near post and Milinkovic-Savic catches the ball in front of Thiago.
30 min Casemiro arrowed a superb pass toward Rafinha on the right side of the area. He heads it across the area and past Milenkovic. Casemiro’s demise is a farce.
27 min: Great goalkeeping from Milinkovic-Savic! Thiago Silva, the old bully, puts Vinicius through on goal with a forensic pass, but Milinkovic-Savic is too quick off his line and dives bravely at Vinicius’ feet.
25 minutes it’s a bit better from Serbia. Tadic moves down the right and angles a deep cross towards Mitrovic. Alison comes to claim it with authority from his line.

21st minute Neymar struck a stinger from 30 yards which were blocked by Veljkovic. That was beautifully struck.

17 min Serbia enjoy their first extended spell of possession. They don’t seem surprised, even if they don’t bother Alison.
14 min: Neymar almost scores from a corner! And I’m sure he meant it. He spotted Milinkovic-Savic drifting towards the six-yard line and curled a wicked inswinger under the crossbar. Milinkovic-Savic scampered behind to pick it up.
13 min: Exciting run from Vinicius. He got past Zivkovic, who recovered well to concede a corner with Veljkovic’s help.
9 min: Casemiro loaned the ball to a few people in quick succession and then darted a superb disguise past Neymar in the area. He manages it skillfully but then runs into trouble. That was one helluva pass from Casemiro.
8 min Sergej Milinkovic-Savic makes a beeline for the Brazil area and is blocked on the edge by Maquinhos.
6 min Pavlovic is booked a bit harshly for a foul on Neymar.
4 Minutes The first bit of excitement. Rafinha beats Pavlovic on the right and drives a low cross that is kicked at the near post.
1 minute PEEEEEP PEEEEEP! Brazil moves from left to right as we look at it.
Brazil vs Serbia Predicted Lineup
Photos from a Brazil training session leaked by Marca suggest Vinicius Jr is in line for a starting berth against Serbia, who top a qualifying group featuring Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
Raphinha is set to line up on the opposite flank, while it is reported that Manchester United midfielder Fred will be left on the bench.

Serbia’s star forwards Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic have both returned to fitness after suffering injuries earlier this season. However, there is no doubt that Philip Kostic of Juventus does not have a muscle problem.
