With one match remaining in the UEFA Champions League group stage, 14 teams have qualified for the round of 16 with two spots still up for grabs.
The latest teams to book their place in the knockout rounds were Chelsea, Liverpool, Inter, PSG, Benfica, Porto, and Borussia Dortmund, all of whom confirmed qualification on Matchday 5.
They join five clubs who booked their Round of 16 tickets on Matchday 4: Real Madrid and 2001 finalist Manchester City were the first teams to secure a place in the knockout rounds, while Italian league leaders Napoli, German power Bayern Munich and the Belgian side. Club Brugge joined them a day later.
With only the top two teams from Groups A-H progressing to the knockouts, there will be a total of 16 teams eliminated from the group stage, meaning there are four open spots left to claim: two and one each in Group D. Group E and F.
Real Madrid used a magical run to lift the trophy in the 2021/22 knockout stages, eliminating several continental powers along the way: PSG (Round of 16), Chelsea (Quarterfinals), Manchester City (Semifinals), and Liverpool (Final). They are now four rounds away from defending their title and adding to their all-time record of Champions League wins.

Are there away goals in the Champions League?
As with last season, away goals will not act as tiebreakers in the knockout rounds of the Champions League if the teams are even on aggregate goals.
Instead, 30 minutes of extra time will be played on aggregate goals after the second leg. If the deadlock persists, a penalty shootout will decide the series.
The 2021/22 season was the first since 1965 that away goals were not used as tiebreakers.
The 2021/22 tournament had the only two knockout round series to require extra time and they both involved eventual champions Real Madrid. They beat Chelsea in the quarter-finals and Manchester City in the semi-finals without penalty kicks in extra time.
Champions League Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals in 2023
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played in the same two-leg format in the Round of 16, with the team scoring the most goals over the two legs advancing.
If the teams are level on aggregate goals after the end of the second leg, they will head to 30 minutes of extra time and penalty kicks if necessary.
The quarterfinals will be held in April, the semifinals in May, and the finals in June.
Quarterfinals of Champions League
After the Round of 16 winners have been determined, a quarterfinal draw will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023, that will establish the rest of the knockout round bracket in the final.
The quarterfinal draw involves no seeding and unlike the round of 16, teams from the same country can be drawn against each other.
