Before then, it’s not Christmastime. Cher starts moving on the dance floor.
The ageless diva transformed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade route into a dance club on Thursday, Nov. 23, by performing “DJ Play a Christmas Song” from her brand-new Christmas album. She did this on a silver stage surrounded by dancers decked out like discofied toy soldiers.
For the grand finale, a group of dancers dressed in silver also encircled the stage, carrying large red hearts.
With its vocoder-assisted vocals and relentless beat, the club-banger Christmas song is reminiscent of one of Cher’s greatest hits, “Believe,” from 1998. Cher’s highest-peaking song on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart, “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” debuted at No. 3 last month. Meanwhile, its parent album, Christmas, debuted at the top of the Top Holiday Albums list earlier this month.
According to Cher, in a recent interview with Billboard regarding the new album, “They’re not ‘Christmas Christmas’ songs, OK? These songs are simply amazing. Furthermore, I hardly ever like what I do, so I never say that. However, I’m happy and people seem to like it. I may be very picky, but I think the songs are fantastic, and so does everyone else who hears them.
Flavor Flav, the rapper for Public Enemy, was among Cher’s biggest admirers; the crowd was seen wildly cheering as the song concluded on screen.
Even though one fan on X questioned: “Is Cher singing ‘DJ Play a Christmas Song,’ or did someone spike my coffee with absinthe?” social media is raving about it as well.
