David Lin, an American pastor who had been imprisoned in China since 2006, was released on Sunday, according to the State Department. Washington believes that Lin’s detention was unjustified.

For years, American lawmakers had pleaded with Beijing to release Lin, who was serving a life sentence for contract fraud.

“We applaud the liberation of David Lin from the People’s Republic of China prison. For the first time in almost 20 years, he is finally able to visit his family again after returning to the United States, according to a State Department official.

Politico was previously informed by Lin’s daughter Alice that her 68-year-old father would be traveling to San Antonio, Texas.

Politico cited her as stating, “We have a lot of time to make up for, and words cannot describe how happy we are.”

Lin, along with two other inmates, Kai Li and Mark Swidan, were ordered to be released by President Joe Biden during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping last November, according to the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

According to Washington, the three were unjustly jailed. China asserts that the law is followed in handling these situations.

The case of American citizens detained in China, specifically Lin, Li, and Swidan, is scheduled for a hearing before a congressional commission on Wednesday. The commission stated that the three had health problems.
