Costa Rica head into the final day of matches for Group E ahead of Germany in the group standings – who saw that coming – but both nations are in with a shot at qualifying for the knockout rounds.
The formula for last-placed Germany is simple: they must win at all costs, and by as many goals as possible. A draw or loss will see the four-time world champion out.
While Spain suffered a 7-0 defeat in Ticos, German fans can feel confident of a one-sided victory, but the Central American side rebounded well. Costa Rica’s 1-0 win over Japan gives them another shock win, or even a draw if Japan loses.

Costa Rica vs Germany Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights
Full time, Costa Rica 2-4 Germany
Despite avoiding another upset, Germany have crashed out of the group stage, just as they did in Russia 2018. Costa Rica surged forward in the second half and looked set to displace Spain as runners-up for a while, but eventually finished bottom of Group E. The sides are disappointed, then, but Costa Rica can feel proud for coming so close to the knockouts. Germany, meanwhile, faces a troubling investigation.
99 min Musiala continues to chase an elusive goal, but can’t beat Navas.
It’s all over at the Khalifa International Stadium. Germany has been eliminated from the World Cup, while Japan has become the winner of Group ‘E’ and Spain has become the runner-up.
On 90+6 minutes, Musiala breaks back and looks certain to score, but Salas makes a crucial intervention and puts the ball away.
90+3 min Both sides make late changes, Mathias Ginter coming on for Sule and Anthony Contreras coming on for Oviedo.
90+2 minutes here will be 10 minutes extra time. Havertz nearly completes his hat trick, but can’t quite execute the finish.
Goal! Costa Rica 2-4 Germany (Füllkrug 90)
On 88 minutes Kimmich plays a beautiful quarterback-style ball from deep to Sane, who knocks it down as Fulcrug heads home. It appeared to be chalked for offside but, after some consultation with his team and VAR, Frappart awarded the goal.
Goal! Costa Rica 2-3 Germany (Havertz 85)
This is a hammer blow for Costa Rica. Gnabry flashed a cross to the far post from the right, setting up Havertz to score his second goal of the game.
83 minutes, Musiala set up another Mazi dribble, working the opening to lift his shot over the crossbar.
79 minute Bennett pressed Rudiger on the pitch, making him very uncomfortable, but he recovered and returned the ball to Neuer.
75 minutes what a save. Sane backs away and goes for a fullkrug. He connects well, but Navas throws himself in the way and saves from point-blank range.
Goal! Costa Rica 2-2 Germany (Havertz 73)
Germany immediately equalized. Fulcrug flicked the ball to Havertz after Costa Rica failed to clear their line and he lifted a shot over Navas and into the back of the net. For a moment there, Costa Rica looked set to advance to the last 16 at Spain’s expense.
Goal! Costa Rica 2-1 Germany (Vargas 70)
wow Costa Rica wins the free kick. Campbell lifted the ball high into the box. Waston returned the goal. It bobbles and falls for Vargas, who drops it past Neuer with an extended boot.
67 min Germany can’t believe their eyes. Musiala hits the post again, curling a shot against the upright from distance.
66 minutes Flick made a double change, bringing on Kai Havertz and Mario Gotze for Müller and Raum.
60 minutes, Germany went ahead with a hint of desperation. Musiala hits the inside of the post, leaving his teammates with their hands on their heads.
Goal! Costa Rica 1-1 Germany (Tejeda 58)
It’s all going horribly wrong for Germany. Fuller breaks in down the right and floats an inviting cross into the box. Kendall Weston drove forward and fired a header at Neuer, who could only parry it. Yeltsin Tejeda follows closely behind to score.
55 minutes is a crack from Sane distance. The ball goes harmlessly into the stands.
53 minutes Klostermann picked out Leroy Sane on the edge of the area, only for Sane to fluff his return ball. It has been an ineffective performance from the Bayern forward.
The second half began We are back in Al Khor.
Half – Time : Costa Rica 0 – 1 German
Germany was in complete control in the first 40 minutes, but the last five minutes illustrated how Costa Rica can still hurt them. They don’t create many chances, but they still have the ability to capitalize on individual mistakes and hit back on the counter. Another goal would have rattled Germany’s nerves but, while they had little trouble creating chances, their finishing has been scattergun. With 12 shots – four on target – but only one goal to show for their efforts, Flick’s side will need to kill this game as soon as possible in the second half.
45 minute Germany canceled out Navas’ goal before Costa Rica took the lead on the counter-attack. They have a momentary four-two, but Campbell can’t get the ball out from under his feet and the threat ends.
39 minutes Gnabry wraps his foot around the ball in the box and swings a shot around the far post. Navas breathed a sigh of relief.
35 minutes Musiala again entered the box, shooting wide from a promising position. Germany is better at the top, no doubt, but they have let some good chances pass and, as they know all too well from their loss to Japan, a 1-0 lead is certainly not insurmountable.
34 minutes Kimmich has a shot from a distance that curls viciously in the air, almost wrong-footing Navas. He saves but spills the ball, to clear.
28 minute, Costa Rica got the first-half chance of the game. Brian Oviedo curls in a cross from the left which falls well for former Arsenal winger Joel Campbell. He tries to hit a volley but goes horribly wide.
25 min Musiala, who has been Germany’s biggest threat, has a shot blocked inside the area. Germany has 72% possession and Costa Rica have none of their six shots, which gives some sense of the pattern of the game.
22 minutes Gnabry and Musiala combined dangerously on the edge of the area, but the attack broke down when the former failed to control a return ball.
18 min Costa Rica is doing their best to get service to Yohan Venegas, but Germany’s center-backs are dealing well with the threat so far. After coming in for a lot of criticism, especially after the defeat to Japan, Nicklas Sule has been reasonably self-assured, while Antonio Rudiger has been solid.
14 minutes Leon Goretzka beat the offside trap and got a header on target from close range, but Navas produced a reflex save to deny him.
Goal! Costa Rica 0-1 Germany (Gnabry 10)
It’s a simple opener for Germany and no more than they deserve after an impressive start. David Raum comes down the left and whips in a cross to Gnabry, who glances a header into the far corner.
7 min Musiala dances in the box and disrupts several attempted tackles, but fails to clear a shot. Costa Rica is living a dangerous life.
4 min: Navas makes another save after Gnabry ghost and fires a shot on the target from a narrow-angle. The assistant flag goes up but, regardless, it’s been a shaky start from Costa Rica.
2 min: Keylor Navas is called into action almost immediately, putting Jamal Musiala out for a corner. Joshua Kimmich’s delivery is cleared.
Kick off! We are running at Al Beit Stadium.
Costa Rica vs Germany lineup, team news
Costa Rica manager Luis Fernando Suarez is expected to make just one change, with Juan Pablo Vargas filling in for the suspended Francisco Calvo (picking up a yellow card).
Anthony Contreras will be the highest forward with Joel Campbell and Gerson Torres clashing deep with wingback Kisher Fuller (scorer vs. Japan) and former Everton player Brian Oviedo providing defensive help.
Costa Rica (5-4-1, right to left): 1-Navas (GK) — 4-Fuller, 18-Washton, 6-Duarte, 3-Vargas, 8-Oviedo — 13-Torres, 17-Tejeda, 5-Borges , 12-Campbell – 7-Contreras
German manager Hansi Flick confirmed that all 26 players in the German roster are fit and available to start, including the impressive Leroy Sane, who missed the opening group game as he recovers from a knee injury. He played in the last 20 minutes against Spain.
Right-back Lucas Klostermann, another substitute in the 1-1 draw with Spain, could also advance Thilo Kehrer. But German fans would really like to see Werder Bremen forward sensation Niklas Fulkrug start ahead of Thomas Muller and Kai Havertz, although Flick is likely to use Fulkrug as a spark if pressed by the Ticos.
Germany (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1-Neur (GK) — 16-Klostermann, 15-Sulay, 2-Rudiger, 3-Raum — 6-Kimich, 8-Goretzka — 19-Sane, 21-Gundogan, 14-Musiala – 13-Muller
