Canada got their first-ever World Cup goal, just two minutes into the game, but the CONCACAF side was looking for more and fell short of expectations.

Despite John Herdman’s pre-match comments that Canada beat Croatia to advance to the knockout stages, a brace from Andrej Kramaric led Croatia to a 4–1 victory in the 2018 World Cup final.

The result officially eliminated Les Rouges from knockout stage contention, sitting on zero points from two matches. A missed opportunity against Belgium now feels like a huge missed opportunity, as the Canadians were soundly beaten in this game.

Croatia, meanwhile, topped Group F in a tiebreaker over Morocco, who stunned Belgium earlier in the day. Luka Modric and Co. aren’t officially through to the knockout stages yet, but a draw against Belgium in the final will be enough.

Croatia vs Canada Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights

Fulltime: Croatia 4-1 Canada
Canada is the second team to be eliminated from the 2022 World Cup, as John Herdman’s pre-match comments come back to bite him. Les Rouges weren’t as bad as the final scoreline suggested, but Croatia was well punished for defensive mistakes.

Croatia topped the group in the tiebreaker and is in a great position to advance. It will be two of the top three teams advancing with Canada out of contention. Still, they will have an early Davies goal to savor, a historic moment for the CONCACAF nation in just its second World Cup.

90+4 min: GOAL! Croatia! No, Kamal Miller, who had a rough game, ends up with a nightmare low light. As the Canadian defense plays a high line in hopes of a late goal, the ball bounces right off his foot and a two-man breakaway occurs from the midway line. It’s substitute Lovro Majer who gets the goal with unselfish play from teammate Sub Orsic. Cheers to Canada, who were ready for this game, but this is what happens when points are thrown at the end of life.

90+2 minutes: Six minutes of added time. Canada is pushing hard for at least one more goal, even if it’s not enough. Alphonso Davies sends in a sensational cross that falls agonizingly between two Canadian attackers, and then Junior Hoilett’s wicked follow-up is wide left, not missing much.

85th minute: Kamal Miller and Luka Modric get into a scuffle, and both get yellow cards. It seems Miller was aggressive, and Modric felt the caution harsh. Moments later, Lucas Cavallini is almost at Davies’ great through-ball, but Juranovic’s superb tackle cuts it out at the last moment.
Croatia is preparing replacements on the sidelines to see this game out. Modric and Perisic are off, Mario Pasalic and Mislav Orsic are brought on.

79th minute: Chance, Croatia! Another amazing save from Borjan! This time in double! Canada’s defense is all over the place in the penalty area, and first Perisic fires from a tight angle, but Borjan produces an incredible kick-save. It then falls to a completely unmarked Brozovic from the penalty spot, and Borjan is at it again as the effort is poor despite the goal difference.

74th minute: Chance, Canada! A looped ball into the box for Davies sees the Bayern Munich man get his head on it and loft Buchanan on the doorstep, but the goalkeeper is there to collect, and the flag goes up anyway. Buchanan was miles offside.

73rd minute: Canada makes two final changes hoping to throw caution to the wind and get back into this game. Jonathan David comes out, interestingly, as Captain Hutchinson. Cavallini and Adekugbe are active.

70th minute: Goal! Croatia! It’s too easy for Croatia, and it’s game over, Kramaric sinks Canada! He’s got all day to shoot in the penalty area as Kamal Miller completely freezes and fails to get a foot on his man. Kramaric cuts inside and fires a perfect strike from his left. Canada, who is out with a loss, seems to have a long way to go on their way back.

68th minute: Too many bad presents for Canada now. Croatia looks comfortable defensively, and they are taking advantage of turnovers to spring counter-attacks.

Jonathan David makes a quick run to Alphonso Davies down the right, but David’s through-ball is painfully cut out. Hutchinson then lobs it into the middle in his own half, and Borjan has to come off his line to prevent Petkovic from hitting the free into the net.

66th minute: For a few minutes, Canada captain Atiba Hutchinson was literally playing with a tampon in his nose to stop a bloody nose. It didn’t last long, but the Internet had a field day. Many nods to Amanda Bynes.

63rd minute: Jonathan David has a free-kick just outside the top-right corner of the penalty area, but he drives his low effort straight into the wall. Canada retains possession and goes again, but Johnston’s delivery is too deep and into a crowd of players.

59th minute: As it was midway through the first half, this game is end-to-end, a very lively affair with both teams looking for a game-changing goal.

Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic has made his first substitution, bringing on Bruno Petkovic in place of goalkeeper Marko Livja. Herdman counters with Junior Hoilett replacing Richie Laria.

55th minute: Chance, Canada! Now LIVAKOVIC makes a big save! Jonathan David takes aim from distance, and the Croatian keeper has to leap acrobatically and tip it over the bar! Two amazing saves in quick succession!

Soon after, Dejan Lovren picked up Croatia’s first yellow card of the game for a late trip on Jonathan David.

54th minute: Chance, Croatia! What to save Milan Borjan! It’s amazing! Croatia returned to advantage in possession, got forward very well, and Kramaric received the ball unmarked on the penalty spot. It’s a certain goal, but somehow Borjan gets down to it and makes a sensational save. You have to think that if Croatia scores again, Canada will sink.

49th minute: Chance, Canada! Canada started the second half like they started the first half, and Jonathan Osorio, just on the field, came close to equalizing! He bends a curler agonizingly wide of the left post.

46th minute: Two essential changes are being made for Canada in the second half. Jonathan Osorio and Ismael Cone came in while Stephen Eustaquio and Cyle Larin came in.

One of Canada’s most important players, Eustaquio is a huge loss for Canada. He should be injured after receiving treatment in the first half, because he’s not someone you take out when he’s healthy. It’s not clear what the injury might be, but he appeared to have some muscle as he sat on the ground shaking his leg.

Halftime: Croatia 2-1 Canada
Alphonso Davies made history with Canada’s first World Cup goal in the second minute. It looked like the CONCACAF nation would back up John Herdman’s aggressive pre-match comments, as they looked set for an upset.

Then, Croatia turned the game on its head around the half-hour mark, piling on the pressure and leaving Canada’s defense in complete disarray. Goals from Karamaric and Livza put the Europeans in front, and as it stands Canada will be out of contention for the knockout stages.

45+5 mins: Canada need a last-ditch tackle from Atiba Hutchinson to stop another Croatia break, and the captain is furious as he slams the turn and has words for his defensive unit. It all fell apart for the Canadians after their great early start.

45+2 mins: Canada will be lucky to only score at half-time as Croatia keeps the pressure on. Karmarik, looking for his own second, rifled a shot from outside the top of the penalty area, but fired high. This is an attack.

44th minute: Goal! Croatia! It’s a rapid-fire double for the Europeans, and they’ve turned the game on its head! A total breakdown defensively for Canada, and one man coming into today’s starting lineup, Marco Lavazza, is in goal. A disaster for Canada before the half, as they collapsed for the last 15-20 minutes of this game.

40th minute: Stephen Eustaquio is down and needs treatment, which is a big concern for Canada because he is one of the most important players in the midfield. He is able to walk under his own power and, for now, it looks like he will be back in action.

At the very least, even after the goal, the stoppage is a much-needed breather for Canada, who are facing massive Croatian pressure. The European side has its ears pinned back.

36th minute: Goal! Croatia! It’s coming, and there’s a draw! A man with success been a regular, door-knocker for a long time. It comes on Ivan Perisic’s excellent diagonal ball on the right side of the penalty area, and the Croatian striker had a good window to equalize.

35th minute: Chance, Croatia! As we expected, the Croatian had a great look at the goal at the end of possession, and it required a great save from Milan Borjan! Modric’s vertical ball feeds the striker, but Borjan is there to keep it out from a tight angle.

34th minute: Croatia’s pressure is relentless, and only last-ditch defense prevents them from getting a good shot on goal from a long throw. Luka Modric looks great, but it’s blocked. Canadian defenders scrambling to keep a lid on things.

Modric’s wonderful cross is just inches over Kramaric’s head. It has a goal in possession if it continues…

30th minute: Croatia has looked the better side in the last 5-10 minutes, and Canada will have to be careful. Canada is still leading in this end-to-end game, but they haven’t been able to put the final product together after their bright opening.

26th minute: Goal disallowed! Croatia! It’s a beautiful goal from Croatia, as Andrzej Kramaric beats the Canadian defense for a three-on-three, but the flag is for offside. It’s not actually Kramaric who’s offside, it’s Livza, who fed him on the break and just ducked into the defensive line. A big warning for Canada’s defense.

21st minute: This game is wide open, end-to-end stuff. First, a pinging ball around the box was cleared again before Croatia could get a shot on the net. Canada then breaks down the other end and Alphonso Davies has space to drive into the box. He closes in and delivers a cross back into the penalty area, but it’s behind his two fellow attackers.

18th minute: Croatia again troubles Borjan with a good attacking move in the Canada goal, as he nervously knocks one into traffic, momentarily leaving the goal gaping, but no one can get a shot off before he recovers. Borjan has had some nervous moments so far.

15th minute: The game has been very back and forth so far, but there is no real look at the goal. Canada has a half-chance as Laria sends another sharp run to a great ball from deep for Davies, but he is away from a dangerous position and the chance evaporates.

9th minute: Chance, Canada! Cyle Larin is clean on goal and almost has a second, but he’s away with good goalkeeping from Dominik Livakovic. The flag goes up, so it wouldn’t have counted anyway, and replays show he was good. In the end, it’s a great offside trap from the Croatian defense.

7th minute: A YIKES moment for Milan Borjan in goal for Canada as he throws a deflected cross right on the goal line, but there’s no Croatian player to get it and it’s ultimately not punished.

6th minute: The Khalifa International Stadium is energized with this early start from Canada. It’s loud.

2nd minute: Goal! Canada! Canada has scored their first World Cup goal, and it had to be Alphonso Davies! A perfect delivery from Tajon Buchanan comes into space for the penalty, and Davies charges past the Croatian defender and delivers a huge header! That’s not saving!

What a start for Canada, with Croatia sleeping behind!

1st minute: The national anthem is over, and the game is on! There are many stories surrounding this game, which will now shape the other half of Group F after Morocco’s win over Belgium.

Croatia vs Canada lineup, team news

Nikola Vlasic picked up a calf injury in the Morocco game and was replaced by Marco Livaja in a surprise selection. The 29-year-old forward plays domestically for Croatia’s Hadzuk Split.

Other changes were reportedly being entertained at the back, but ultimately no other changes were made as Dejan Lovren and Andrej Kramaric retained their places in the starting lineup.

Croatia confirmed lineup (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Livakovic (GK) — 22. Juranovic, 6. Lovren, 20. Guardiola, 19. Sosa — 10. Modric, 11. Brozovic, 8. Kovacic — 14. Livaja, 9. Kramaric, 4. Perisic.

Canada manager John Herdman said all 26 players are available for selection, but lineup speculation has swirled over whether some players could use a break in three games played over an eight-day span.

Herdman makes one change from a close call against Belgium, with Cyle Larin replacing Junior Hoilett. Stars Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David retained their spots, while captain Atiba Hutchinson became the first Canadian international to reach 100 caps.

Davis and Alastair Johnston, two of Canada’s most important players, are one yellow card away from being suspended for the final game, but Herdman said he didn’t think about cards when naming the lineup.

Canada confirmed lineup (3-5-2, right to left): 18. Borjan (GK) — 2. Johnston, 5. Vitoria, 4. Miller — 22. Laria, 7. Eustace, 11. Buchanan, 13. Hutchinson, 19. Davis – 20. David, 17. Larin.

It was already set to be a barnburner based on the fact that both teams are desperate for three points. Add the fact that Canada coach John Herdman said on national TV that he told his team they needed to go out and “impress Croatia” and that has the potential to inject another level of hostility into the clash.

As the upstart Canadians lost a heartbreaker against Belgium, Herdman fueled an emotional outburst. Although Belgium survived a scare from Canada, World Cup 2018 finalists Croatia could be upset candidates given how weak they looked in their goalless draw against Morocco.
