Now, the boy with a Tony is The Boy Who Lived.

A Tony Award for best performance by an actor in a prominent role in a musical went to Daniel Radcliffe, who played the part of Charley Kringas in the Broadway production of “Merrily We Roll Along.” Radcliffe appeared in the “Harry Potter” film series from age 11 to age 21.

It’s also Radcliffe’s first Tony nomination, first Tony win, and first major acting honor.

“I’ll speak quickly and try not to cry. In his victory speech, Daniel Radcliffe mentioned his close friendship with his co-stars, saying, “I don’t even have to act in this show.” “Never again will it be this good for me.”

In a video recording that Deadline uploaded on X, Radcliffe stated, “When I finished ‘Potter,’ I had no notion what I wanted to do for a living.” “You kind of get a drive to accomplish as many things as you can when you play one character for a long time.”

When the Stephen Sondheim musical opened on Broadway in 1981, it was a notorious failure, ending after just 16 performances. Three years following Sondheim’s passing, director Maria Friedman revised the production, which was led by an all-star cast that included Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Radcliffe.

“In April, I told The Atlantic that Harry Potter will be the first line of my obituary.” Radcliffe, 34, said as much. “I wanted to experience as many different things as possible because I knew that it would be the culmination of all those things—rather than just one—that would genuinely kind of shift me in people’s perceptions.”

After the eight-picture “Potter” series, Radcliffe pursued other options in theater and independent film.

2008 saw him make his Broadway debut as the lead in a revival of “Equus,” which necessitated nude performances. It was during the 2011 production of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” that he made his Broadway theatrical debut.

“The Lifespan of a Fact” and “The Cripple of Inishmaan” are among his other Broadway credits.

Since “Merrily We Roll Along” debuted off-Broadway at the New York Theater Workshop, Radcliffe has been a member of the cast. The show moved to Broadway in October, and July 7 is when it is supposed to end.
