Following his lackluster debate performance last month, congressional Democrats have been urging President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential contest.
The first person to openly suggest that the president should resign was Texas Democrat Rep. Lloyd Doggett on July 2, but others have subsequently done so as well. Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont, the first Democratic senator to urge Biden to out from the campaign, did so on July 10th, citing it as being “for the good of the country.”
Apart from the calls made by politicians in public, two Democrats at least said the same thing in secret during a meeting with other senators.
Nevertheless, a number of politicians, particularly those in the Congressional Black Caucus, have supported the president. In a July 8 letter to Capitol Hill Democrats, Biden reaffirmed his candidacy, citing “the voters have spoken.”
