Denmark was left to ponder a disappointing 2022 FIFA World Cup Group D opener as Tunisia earned a deserved point after a late VAR decision went in their favor.

When referee Cesar Ramos was asked to check the incident where Christian Eriksen’s corner hit the arm of Tunisia’s Yassin Meria, the African side must have feared the worse.

But Ramos decided it wasn’t spot-kick worthy and Tunisia, who have never qualified from the group stage, could celebrate a job well done.

They created the better chances in the first half and were indebted to a great save from Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to deny Issam Jebali from scoring.

The Danes improved after the break and failed to score when Andreas Cornelius headed against the post after Andreas Skov Olsen had a goal disallowed for offside.

But they could not find the breakthrough and must regroup before facing defending champions France on Friday, while Tunisia faces Australia on Saturday, November 26.

Denmark vs Tunisia Live Updates, 2022 World Cup Highlights

Full time: Denmark 0-0 Tunisia

A great result for Tunisia, who more than deserved that point. In this group, along with France and Australia, Denmark has suffered a setback.

90th minute+4: Christian Eriksen swings another corner and the ball looks to be in the hands of Tunisia’s Yassin Meria. It will take some time but a VAR review is indicated. But no! Referee Cesar Ramos ruled that it was not a penalty. Of course, it would be harsh.

90th minute: Just five minutes of added time for a change.

88th minute: Wajdi Kechrida and Ferzani Sassi are on for Tunisia. Can anyone find a winner?

85th minute: Tunisian sub Taha Yassin Khenisi goes into the book for a late challenge on Andreas Cornelius.

83rd minute: Almost an inauspicious start from Hannibal as he tracks down Joachim Mahele to tackle as he drives down the left byline. The Danish defender appeared to be brought down after clipping the ball over Hannibal, but the referee ruled that the ball had already gone out.

79th minute: Cheers from the Tunisian fans as Hannibal Mezbri, on loan from Manchester United to Birmingham City, makes his entrance. Taha Yassin Khenissi is also active, with Issam Jebali and Youssef Maskani making way.

77th minute: Denmark substitute Matthias Jensen becomes the second player to go into the book for a sliding challenge on Naim Sliti.

72nd minute: Tunisia are appealing for a penalty after the ball hits Denis’ hands in a goalmouth scramble, but VAR is opting not to review the incident. The African side is outraged by this decision.

70th minute: From the resulting corner, Andreas Christensen plants a powerful header on goal and Andreas Cornelius, dropping forward, manages to head against the far post. How did he not score there?

69th minute: Christian Eriksen, who took over as captain with Kjaer’s departure, forces Aymen Dahmen to tip his left-footed drive over the top from the edge of the area.

67th minute: A change for Tunisia with Naeem Sliti coming on for Anis Ben Slimane.

65th minute: A triple change for Denmark, which brings on Matthias Jensen, Andreas Cornelius and Jesper Lindström, with Kaspar Dolberg, Andreas Skov Olsen and Simon Kjaer coming on.

61st minute: Some neat first-time passing from Denmark takes them into the Tunisian penalty area and Andreas Skov Olsen puts in a dangerous ball which the Africans do well to clear for a corner. But Christian Eriksen’s set-piece came to nothing. Who will catch this game?

55th minute: Denmark put the ball in the net after a smart left-foot finish from Andreas Skov Olsen when the ball fell well for him in the box, but the flag first goes up for offside.

50th minute: Great break out from Tunisia’s Anis Ben Slimane, who is beaten in the Denmark penalty area but as he tries to cross it for Issam Jebali, the Danish defender turns to clear for a corner.

46th minute: We’re back and it’s a great start from Tunisia as Mohamed Draeger whips in the ball from the right wing to dispossess Joachim Anderson for a corner.

Half time: Denmark 0-0 Tunisia

Great chances for Tunisia and an interesting game with Denmark looking dangerous from a set-piece through Christian Eriksen, but it was goalless at the break.

45th minute + 4: Christian Eriksen whips in a dangerous free-kick but Tunisia does well to clear their line.

45th minute: A setback for Denmark as Thomas Delaney himself is forced off after an injury in a tackle. He might have a hamstring. Mikkel Damsgaard, one of three Brentford players in the Danish squad, replaces him. We’re four minutes into added time at the end of this first half.

42nd minute: Big save! Tunisian dangerman Issam Jebali tries to chip Kasper Schmeichel but the Danish goalkeeper does well to turn it with his right hand just wide of the post.

38th minute: Tunisia have a corner. It breaks for Aissa Laidouni in the box and the Ferencvaros midfielder gives it an almighty clatter but it whistles past the right post.

32nd minute: Tunisia’s Mohamed Draeger works his way into the Denmark penalty area and flicks the ball in with the heel of his right foot, but Pierre-Emile Hojsberg gets a foot in – legally – despite Draeger’s claim he was brought down. Lots of whistles from the Tunisian supporters though.

30th minute: A beautiful floated ball from Simon Kjer found Andreas Skov Olsen on goal, but the Tunisian boot was cleared as the Danish striker pulled the trigger.

24th minute: Denmark’s Rasmus Christensen becomes the first player to be booked for a late challenge.

22nd minute: Denied! Issam Djebali runs clear from halfway for Tunisia and keeps his composure to head home Kasper Schmeichel’s left-footed shot, but late flag rules it out for offside. Right call, in fairness.

20th minute: Good from Denmark, who capitalized on Christian Eriksen’s swinging corner and Joachim Andersson met a determined header toward goal, but Tunisia cleared it away.

18th minute: It’s a bit rushed and unconvincing from Denmark now. Tunisia is misleading them. Striker Issam Jebali gets a leg to break Denmark’s attack before it starts.

12th minute: From a corner, Youssef Masakani glances a near post header over the bar. Promising start for Tunisia.

11th minute: OFF! Tunisia’s Mohamed Dreger lets fly and his shot takes a deflection off Andreas Christensen that whistles wide of Kasper Schmeichel’s right-hand post.

3rd minute: Aissa Laidouni is pumped for it! He robs Christian Eriksen in the box and Tunisia are celebrating as if they have won the game.

1st minute: And we’re underway. Denmark won the corner by attacking in the first 30 seconds.

5 minutes to kick-off: it’s time for the anthem…
