In the intense Premier League derby on Sunday, Manchester City dominated Manchester United, thumping them 3-0. Erling Haaland scored his first two goals for the team at Old Trafford.
After ten games, Pep Guardiola’s triple winners are two points behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur in the standings with 24 points. United is in ninth place with 15 points; their loss was their first in four games across all competitions.
United had suffered six straight losses to their local rivals, including a 2-1 loss in the FA Cup final during City’s treble campaign the previous year, which tied United’s record from 1999.
“Excellent. “What a great victory! The team and the game were outstanding,” Haaland remarked.
“It is unquestionably one of our best victories,” midfielder Bernardo Silva continued. “To win 3-0 away in this crowd, I think it is certainly one of the best performances.”
In the 26th minute, Haaland, who has scored 11 goals in the league this season, equaled United’s total goal tally. VAR indicated that Rasmus Højlund had hauled down Rodri during a free kick.
The Norwegian striker scored the first penalty granted to City in their 27 Premier League visits to Old Trafford, coolly placing it in the bottom-right corner.
After losing their opening two league games away from home, City outplayed shell-shocked United in the second half. Shortly after the break, their brute of a forward scored again, this time via an overlapping run by Bernardo Silva and a dinked pass to the back post, where rising Haaland headed home.
In the 80th minute, Phil Foden scored his third goal from close range after goalie André Onana parried a shot from Rodri that fell at Haaland’s feet for a simple cross to Foden. A lot of angry United supporters left the stadium early after the goal.
With a breakaway in the first half, Hojlund had a great opportunity to atone for his costly foul, but the 20-year-old was jostled off the ball. Éderson then deflected a late first-half attempt by United midfielder Scott McTominay over the crossbar.
However, City also had a number of close calls, such as a header by Haaland that Onana stopped just before halftime.
Last season, City defeated Erik ten Hag’s visiting United team 6-3 at home but fell short 2-1 away from home.
