This August, hip-hop, the most well-liked genre in America, will celebrate 50. It’s difficult to put into words the effect and legacy of the culture, which originated in the Bronx and now permeates every corner of the globe, but hey, that’s what the music is for.

The National Celebration of Hip-Hop will feature free performances on October 6 and 7 at West Potomac Park on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., with pioneers Public Enemy and Ice-T headlining.

Chuck D of Public Enemy declared in a statement that hip-hop is more than just a musical style. It is a cultural movement that has dominated all facets of life over the past 50 years, including fashion, politics, poetry, academics, movies, and the arts. For the people, by the people, our National Celebration brings everything together in one location.

There will also be performances by legendary artists including Peter Gunz, The Sugarhill Gang, Kid ‘n Play, CL Smooth, Soulsonic Force, Roxanne Shante, DJ Kevie Kev Rockwell, Melle Mel and Scorpio, Mick Benzo, Mad Skillz, Joe Ski Love, MC Sha-Rock, Busy Bee, Positive K, Boogie Black, and DJ Kevie Kev Rockwell. Soon, more acts will be revealed.
