The veteran forward, who equaled 1998 world champion Henry in the Qatar 2022 group stage against Australia, is now clear at the top of the remarkable charts after finding the target in the last 16 clashes with Poland. Giroud’s big moment came on the stroke of half-time, the 36-year-old beating the offside trap to clean home with a smart left-footed finish.

Giroud rewrote the history books on his 117th appearance for France, having already become the oldest goalscorer in the nation’s history.

Giroud famously failed to hit the target as Les Bleus triumphed at the 2018 World Cup, but is now playing a key role for Didier Deschamps’ side in the face of Karim Benzema’s injury-enforced absence.
