“Barbie” is supported by legs. The cinematic phenomenon from director Greta Gerwig continued to dominate the box office in its fourth week, grossing $33.7 million, per studio projections on Sunday.
The Warner Bros. movie starring Margot Robbie and produced by her, which is currently playing in 4,137 theaters, defied the trend of most year’s top grosser by reaching $500 million in North America total just one week after breaking the $1 billion barrier globally, a record for a female filmmaker.
After spending a week at No. 3 overall, the second half of the “Barbenheimer” duo, “Oppenheimer,” moved back up to No. 2 in its own fourth week. The $264.3 million domestic gross for the Christopher Nolan-directed movie released by Universal Pictures came from $18.8 million in ticket sales from 3,761 theaters.
The top couple faced weak opposition. Universal’s “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” the highest new release of the week, came in fifth place with a $6.5 million opening weekend.
The Jason Statham shark sequel “Meg 2: The Trench” made $12.7 million in its second week in theaters, falling from second to fifth. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” took third place with $15.6 million domestically in its second week.
